Position Overview:
The Controller at a Cristo Rey school plays a critical role in managing the school’s financial operations and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. The position supports the mission of Cristo Rey schools by overseeing financial planning, reporting, and control processes to maintain the school’s fiscal health and contribute to its mission of providing a faith-based, college preparatory education to underserved students.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management:
- Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial data.
- Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Develop and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the school’s leadership team.
Audit and Compliance:
- Coordinate and lead the annual financial audit process.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations, including tax filings.
- Maintain compliance with Cristo Rey Network and diocesan financial reporting requirements.
Operational Support:
- Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and tuition collection processes.
- Manage employee benefits and contracts
- Maintain insurance
- Oversee cash management and forecasting to ensure liquidity for operational needs.
- Collaborate with the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) to align billing and collections with program operations.
Strategic Financial Planning:
- Provide financial analysis to support strategic decision-making by the school leadership and board of directors.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
- Participate in long-term financial planning to ensure the sustainability of the school’s mission.
Leadership and Collaboration:
- Supervise finance and accounting staff, fostering professional growth and development.
- Collaborate with the President, Principal, and Development Office on financial matters, including fundraising and donor stewardship.
- Serve as a staff liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, presenting financial updates and insights.
Who You Are
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, preferably in a nonprofit or educational setting.
- Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting practices.
- Proficiency in financial software and tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Bloomerang, Google Sheets or similar).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to diverse audiences.
