MISSION STATEMENT

Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine provides free services in York and Cumberland counties to anyone affected by sexual assault, sexual harassment, or sexual abuse, through prevention programs, support, education, and advocacy.

As a Board member with SARSSM, you play a crucial role in supporting our mission. Our team depends on thoughtful, dedicated board members to ensure sound governance, enabling the essential client services we provide. Without your involvement, our advocacy work—focused on Intervention, Prevention, and Engagement—wouldn’t be possible.

SARSSM’s key programs include:

24/7 confidential support Helpline

Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)

School and community-based prevention and education programs

Support groups

Children’s Advocacy Services, including the Children’s Advocacy Center of York County

Role of the Chair:
The Board Chair leads the Board in ensuring effective governance, and plays a critical role in upholding SARSSM’s mission. This includes guiding Board processes, maintaining relationships with the Executive Director, and representing the Board in the community.

Responsibilities:

Board Governance:

Ensure the Board meets its governance responsibilities and understands the roles of management.

Oversee adoption of the Board’s annual work plan, aligned with SARSSM’s mission and strategic directions.

Guide Board Committees, ensuring their work aligns with the annual work plan and is not duplicated at Board meetings.

Lead Board succession, ensuring a process for recruiting and training Board members.

Oversee Board evaluation and provide feedback to individual members.

Presiding Officer:

Set agendas in consultation with the Executive Director, ensuring meetings are focused and efficient.

Ensure meetings are conducted according to by-laws and governance policies.

Facilitate discussions, encouraging participation and balanced input, and guide decision-making.

Represent the Board in dealings with government and regulatory bodies.

Relationships:

Foster strong relationships among Board members and between the Board and senior management.

Meet with each Board member annually to ensure effective contribution of skills and expertise.

Support committee chairs to ensure they understand Board expectations and have necessary resources.

Collaborate with the Executive Director to align on Board expectations and ensure annual performance reviews.

Other Duties:
The Chair will perform additional duties as required by the Board.

Skills and

Qualifications:

Proven leadership and strategic facilitation skills.

Ability to communicate effectively, act impartially, and influence consensus.

Experience working with diverse stakeholders and a trusted advisor to the Executive Director.

At least three years of Board service, with preference for prior Board Chair/President experience.
