Purpose
This Ameri Corps Program is designed to enhance public understanding of early American history and the ongoing struggle for civil rights by supporting interpretive, educational, and community engagement efforts across First State National Historical Park, Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park, and affiliated Delaware historic sites. The program serves diverse communities across Delaware—including students, educators, local residents, and visitors—by expanding equitable access to cultural resources, preserving historically significant stories, and fostering inclusive dialogue about the nation’s past and present.
Guided by values of public service, historical stewardship, equity, collaboration, and civic engagement, the program emphasizes partnerships with local organizations to strengthen community connections and promote lifelong learning.
In this Ameri Corps Position, the member will support program development, deliver interpretive and educational programming, and assist with volunteer coordination across multiple sites and partner organizations. The member contributes to the organization’s mission by helping expand access to history education while building meaningful relationships with community partners and audiences. Through service, the member strengthens the capacity of the parks and affiliated sites to engage the public in impactful and inclusive historical interpretation.
Description
Of Duties
The VISTA member will receive day-to-day supervision from First State NHP staff while supporting capacity-building efforts at three Delaware-affiliated sites of Brown v. Board of Education NHP:
Claymont Community Center, Howard High School, and Hockessin Colored School 107C. During the service year, the VISTA will research and develop engaging, site-specific interpretive programs that highlight each location’s historical significance. The member will also design a volunteer program, including recruitment strategies, training materials, and program structure for staff to implement to deliver interpretive programming and enhance visitor engagement, expanding access to civil rights history and building a sustainable program.
Qualifications
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
- Must be 18–30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD‑214.
- College graduate.
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
Physical Requirements

Some positions may require periodic overnight travel, non‑traditional hours, ability to move across varied terrain, use program‑specific tools, and a range of technology on an infrequent or frequent basis. Time Requirements
- Typically, this position is expected to serve full‑time (35–40 hours), but exact schedules may vary.
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation And Training
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on Ameri Corps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Member will receive a Virtual Member Orientation (VMO) from VISTA on the first day of service.
