The Indianapolis Recorder, one of the nation’s oldest and most respected Black-owned newspapers, is seeking an energetic, curious, and community-minded Staff Writer to join our award-winning newsroom.
For more than 130 years, the Indianapolis Recorder has informed, educated, and empowered readers through impactful journalism. Alongside Indiana Minority Business Magazine, we cover the people, businesses, issues, and events shaping Indianapolis and communities across Indiana.

Position Summary
The Staff Writer is responsible for researching, reporting, and writing accurate, engaging, and timely news and feature stories for print and digital platforms. This position requires strong interviewing, writing, and research skills, along with a commitment to journalistic integrity and serving the community.
Essential Responsibilities
- Research, report, and write news stories, feature articles, and community profiles for the Indianapolis Recorder and Indiana Minority Business Magazine.
- Develop story ideas and pitch original content to newsroom leadership.
- Conduct interviews with community leaders, elected officials, business professionals, nonprofit organizations, and residents.
- Research background information using public records, databases, and other reliable sources.
- Collaborate with editors to determine story angles, deadlines, and presentation.
- Produce accurate, engaging, and timely content for both print and digital platforms.
- Proofread and revise stories to meet AP Style and Recorder editorial standards.
- Coordinate with photographers, designers, and production staff to enhance storytelling.
- Assist with maintaining the Recorder’s website and social media channels by creating digital-first content.
- Attend community meetings, events, press conferences, and breaking news assignments as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Mass Communication, or a related field.
- Professional reporting experience preferred; internships or student newsroom experience will also be considered.
- Strong writing, editing, interviewing, and research skills.
- Working knowledge of AP Style.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with digital publishing platforms and social media is preferred.
- Photography, video, or multimedia storytelling experience is a plus.

Pay: $30,000.00 – $35,000.00 per year
