Position: South Side Thrive – Community Outreach Specialist
Overview
The Community Outreach Specialist will maintain a regular and visible presence along Parsons Avenue, conducting street outreach with individuals experiencing poverty and homelessness. Responsibilities include providing support and connecting people to resources, engaging with local nonprofits and businesses, and performing regular litter pick-up and general clean-up of the Parsons Avenue corridor.
Must be able to work occasional non-traditional hours, including early mornings, evenings, and Saturdays.
Valid Ohio driver’s license and proof of auto insurance are required by hospital policy. Must pass a motor vehicle background inspection, insurance eligibility, driving qualifications, and training set forth by Nationwide Children’s Hospital and must maintain qualification of insurance guidelines.
Job Description Summary
Coordinates outreach efforts, engages with community stakeholders, develops partnerships, and implements strategies to increase visibility and impact. Develops and implements collaborative programs and services by working with community–based organizations and hospital staff.
Essential Functions:
Develops outreach strategies to engage with target audiences.
Collaborates with team members to create outreach materials.
Conducts outreach activities to promote programs or services.
Analyzes outreach data to measure effectiveness of campaigns.
Builds relationships with community partners to expand outreach efforts.
Represents the organization at events to increase visibility and awareness.
Education
Requirement
Bachelor’s Degree in a health or social services related field, or equivalent experience, preferred.
Licensure Requirement
Valid Ohio driver’s license and proof of auto insurance as required by hospital policy and position-specific requirements. Must pass motor vehicle background inspection, insurance eligibility, driving qualifications, and training set forth by Nationwide Children’s Hospital and maintain qualification of insurance guidelines.
Skills
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, required.
Ability to effectively interact with diverse communities, races, cultures, and classes, respecting their needs for self-respect and dignity.
Previous experience working with people experiencing homelessness, poverty, and other challenges is strongly preferred.
Willingness and ability to provide emotional support, encouragement, and motivation.
Skills in time-management and organization.
Understanding and experience in applying trauma-informed care and de-escalation principles is strongly preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Experience
At least two years of experience in a community-based setting such as healthcare, social services, or community service, required.
Experience in collaborative program development is preferred.
Physical Requirements
Occasionally:
Handling biohazard waste, chemicals/medications; climbing stairs/ladders; exposure to cold and hot temperatures; flexing/extending neck; lifting/carrying 21-60 lbs; pushing/pulling 0-60 lbs; reaching above shoulder; repetitive hand/arm use; working outdoors.
Frequently:
Lifting/carrying 21-40 lbs and 41-60 lbs.
Continuously:
Working outdoors; hot temperatures; standing; walking.
