Job Summary
The Restoration Technician I position supports habitat restoration projects at Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA). Most of this position is field based on a crew of 5 supporting riparian and instream habitat restoration projects with minimal office time. Projects will include planting trees and shrubs, conducting monitoring surveys, maintaining restoration sites, interacting with community volunteers and landowners, maintaining a native plant nursery and use of hand/power tools. Field staff work in all weather conditions and work as a team to implement projects. Typical schedule is Monday through Thursday 7:00 am-5:30 pm, 40 hours a week walking several miles a day on uneven terrain.
Salmon Habitat Restoration Duties
- Implement appropriate site preparation at riparian restoration sites
- Pickup and storage of new plant materials and supplies
- Plant native riparian vegetation
- Install appropriate vole, beaver and deer protection, and mulch when available
- Install slope stabilization seed, straw and erosion control fabric where necessary
- Construct livestock exclusion where necessary
- Maintain riparian projects including mowing and application of herbicide
- Assist with NSEA instream project implementation
- Provide flagging when necessary
- Conduct fish passage barrier assessments and spawner surveys
- Conduct appropriate pre and post project vegetation and instream monitoring
- Maintain NSEA native plant nursery
- Maintain and repair restoration tools and equipment
- Maintain and organize NSEA shop
- Operate NSEA trucks, tractor, RTV, and hand and power tools in a safe manner
- Attend quarterly habitat meetings
- Work with Project coordinator to maintain NSEA facilities
- Assist in general office duties, i.e., empty compost, garbage and recycling
- Help with NSEA events when needed
- Attend staff meetings and retreats
- Professionally represent NSEA in all public activities/job related actions
- Collaborate with others to tell NSEA’s story
- Communicate NSEA’s work to community
Required Qualifications
· Two years of relevant work experience
· Passion for NSEA’s mission in local salmon recovery
· Ability to perform data recording/entry
· Effective written and verbal communication skills
· Comfortable working in adverse weather conditions
· Willingness to apply herbicide, following WSDA laws and safety regulations
· Ability to clearly communicate with team and supervisor, any issues/concerns in the field
Additional Desired Qualifications
· Experience with large and small equipment i.e. tractors with mowing/tilling implements, commercial weed whackers, and chainsaws
· Experience with hand tools i.e. shovels, rakes, pitch forks
· Experience using ArcGIS Online and ESRI Field Maps, Survey 123 for data collection
· Experience assisting with implementation of habitat restoration projects such as, noxious weed removal and riparian plantings
· Professional and effective written and oral communication
· Experience maintaining a functional office environment
· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe suite and databases
· Excellent time management and organizational skills
· Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
· Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment
· Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three years
· Working knowledge of Pacific salmon and Northwest natural history
· Work experience in environmental and nonprofit sector
Pay: $22.66 – $27.81 per hour
