The De|Center’s Assistant Director will contribute full-time to our dynamic team, collaborating with other senior team members and leading key administrative, community engagement, and grants management tasks in support of our mission to prevent popular tech from being used for policing, surveillance, and carceral punishment of decentered communities, and by proxy all marginalized communities.

The position is fully remote, reports to the Founder and Principal Researcher, and is anticipated to start in March 2026 at 40 hours/week. Scheduling is flexible provided that the candidate has an ability to schedule meetings during normal business hours in Eastern Time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple simultaneous projects (e.g. research publications, in-person workshops, upgrades to operations, grant proposals) coordinating between internal and external stakeholders and delivering timely and high quality outputs.
  • With support from senior leadership, lead week-to-week project administration (including human resources, contracting, team meetings, community engagement, and supply/IT needs) and annual budget process.
  • Oversee financial operations and liaise with fiscal sponsor on accounting and compliance issues.
  • Oversee grants management, including drafting proposals and reports, tracking spending and deliverables, maintaining the monitoring & evaluation log, and interfacing with funders.
  • Consult with Communications Director on external communications and the management of graphic design contractors and contribute to annual reports.
  • Represent the organization externally at conferences, meetings, and events.
  • Support senior leadership on strategic planning and fundraising, and act as delegate when needed.
  • Manage administrative support staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years’ work experience in nonprofit administration, project management, financial/grants management, human resources, or a related field. Master’s degree or equivalent work experience is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt to diverse global audiences and present in professional settings.
  • Proactive project management skills across multiple simultaneous projects, with a focus on flexibility and adapting to a dynamic environment with diverse stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit financial and grants management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to set and meet goals and identify and resolve problems, as well as to contribute positively to team dynamics, motivation, and cohesion.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Passion for digital rights and inclusion and desire to grow with a young and rapidly developing organization. Familiarity with the De|Center’s work is preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of one or more contexts/communities outside of the Global North is strongly preferred. Ability to speak and write in one or more languages other than English is preferred.

Salary range

$75,000-90,000 USD annually
