The Pharmacy Technician – PrEP Retention Specialist will report to the Director of Pharmacy and will be in the Division of Pharmacy.
The Pharmacy Technician – PrEP Retention Specialist will help facilitate and maintain participant access to PrEP services through a navigation model integrated with pharmacy services. The position will play a critical role in identifying and proactively resolving barriers related to insurance coverage, access to medications, adherence, refills, and continuity of care.
This position will be part of a multidisciplinary effort aimed at ensuring that participants not only initiate PrEP, but are able to maintain it continuously and safely, through navigation, education, monitoring, and service coordination interventions.
Among Its Main Tasks Are
- Participant Assistance: Manage requests for financial assistance for PrEP participants, including submitting and tracking applications, updating documentation, and coordinating renewals when necessary. Provide guidance and support during the process of accessing financial assistance programs offered by manufacturers. Support verification of benefits, resolution of barriers to coverage, and adjudication of claims, as appropriate.
- Retention and Continuity of Treatment: Manage inbound and outbound electronic calls and communications from participants; channel communications to appropriate personnel; answer questions related to the status of deliveries, prescriptions, refills, and other aspects related to medication access. Coordinate with service providers and clinical and pharmacy staff to facilitate efficient prescription processing, schedule deliveries, and follow up on prior authorizations needed to avoid treatment interruptions.
- Adherence monitoring: Track medication pickup and refill patterns, identify potential gaps in adherence, and promptly trigger navigation and retention interventions. Coordinate with the pharmacy team to identify participants who are experiencing delays in their refills or signs of possible treatment interruption.
- Service Navigation and Coordination: Assess clinical, social, economic, and behavioral barriers that may affect access, adherence, or retention, and coordinate the complementary services needed to address them.
- Education and training: Stay current on eligibility requirements, financial assistance programs, coverage processes, and changes related to PrEP services. Provide individualized education to participants on the importance of adherence, timely refills, follow-up appointments, and continuity of preventive services.
- Documentation and follow-up: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of navigation interventions, financial assistance, barriers identified, actions taken, referrals, and results obtained.
The Pharmacy Technician – PrEP Retention Specialist is a critical component in ensuring that initial access to PrEP translates into sustained adherence and retention in the program. The position allows pharmacy processes to be directly integrated with patient navigation, facilitating the early identification of barriers that may lead to delays in refills, interruptions in treatment or abandonment of care.
The position will have the necessary competencies to perform health coverage verifications, provide specialized pharmacy-related assistance, and coordinate with the clinic’s Eligibility and Pharmacy Billing teams. It will also enable you to proactively manage situations related to coverage and access to medications, perform claim verifications, and address potential coverage issues prior to the refill date.
This preventive intervention will reduce the risk of interruptions in access to medicines and promote continuity of care. The ability to identify and resolve these barriers before they affect the participant is an important operational advantage for meeting the project’s adherence and retention goals.
Likewise, the position will be able to identify risk alerts in computer systems related to participants who pick up their medications late, present gaps in refills or show a risk of interruption of treatment. In these situations, it will activate the protocols for retention and reincorporation into care, including the Back to Care Program – AHF, as appropriate.
The position will also make it possible to systematically identify the causes that generate interruptions – including barriers to coverage, economic, social, transportation or access to services – and to coordinate the interventions necessary to solve them. In this way, the position will not be limited to the administrative follow-up of medications, but will function as a specialized component of navigation, interruption prevention, adherence and retention in PrEP.
