Position Summary
The Part-Time Financial Controller provides senior-level financial oversight, internal-control leadership, budgeting support, financial analysis, and audit and compliance coordination for Marine Trades Institute (MTI). Reporting directly to the President, the Controller helps ensure that the institution’s financial records, reporting practices, and internal controls are accurate, timely, transparent, and appropriate for a nonprofit postsecondary institution.
The Controller works closely with the President, Business Services Manager, Finance and Audit Committee, and other institutional leaders. The Controller provides technical direction and review of financial work performed by the Business Services Manager.
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field.
· At least five years of progressively responsible accounting or financial-management experience.
· Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing financial statements, budgets, reconciliations, and financial analyses.
· Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and internal-control practices.
· Experience coordinating annual audits and working with auditors, accountants, or other financial professionals.
· Demonstrated ability to interpret financial information and communicate it clearly to nonfinancial leaders and governing boards.
· Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, professional judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
· Proficiency with accounting software, spreadsheets, and electronic financial-management systems.
· Ability to work independently in a primarily remote or hybrid environment while remaining responsive to institutional needs.
· Ability to be present on campus periodically for audits, budget development, major financial transitions, Board-related activities, and other operational needs.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with nonprofit accounting and financial reporting.
· Certified Public Accountant designation or equivalent advanced accounting qualification.
· Experience with postsecondary education, career and technical education, or another regulated educational environment.
· Experience with federal student aid, restricted grants, donor-restricted funds, or governmental funding.
· Experience presenting financial information to a nonprofit board or finance committee.
· Familiarity with accreditation, Uniform Guidance, Form 990 preparation, and nonprofit regulatory compliance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Oversight and Reporting
· Maintain senior-level oversight of MTI’s accounting and financial-reporting activities.
· Review monthly financial statements, general-ledger activity, reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness.
· Ensure that financial reports are prepared consistently and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and applicable nonprofit accounting standards.
· Analyze financial performance, cash flow, budget variances, restricted funds, and other financial indicators.
· Identify significant financial issues, emerging risks, reporting deficiencies, and unfavorable trends and communicate them promptly to the President.
· Ensure that financial information provided to institutional leadership and the Board is accurate, understandable, and useful for decision-making.
· Support appropriate accounting and reporting for grants, contributions, restricted funds, scholarships, capital projects, and other designated resources.
Budgeting and Financial Planning
· Lead or coordinate development of MTI’s annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the President and institutional leadership.
· Develop financial forecasts, cash-flow projections, enrollment-based revenue models, and multiyear financial scenarios.
· Monitor actual financial performance against approved budgets and provide timely variance analysis.
· Assist leadership in evaluating tuition, staffing, compensation, facilities, contracts, programs, and other decisions with significant financial implications.
· Recommend corrective actions when financial performance differs materially from budget or established expectations.
· Support long-range financial planning and institutional sustainability efforts.
Board and Finance Committee Support
· Prepare or review financial reports and supporting materials for meetings of the Board of Directors and Finance and Audit Committee.
· Attend Finance and Audit Committee meetings and Board meetings when requested by the President.
· Present financial information in a clear and accessible manner and respond to questions from Board and committee members.
· Provide the Finance and Audit Committee with direct access to relevant financial information while maintaining the Controller’s reporting relationship with the President.
· Support the Board’s fiduciary oversight by identifying financial risks, control weaknesses, and matters requiring governance attention.
· Assist institutional leadership and the Finance and Audit Committee in monitoring progress on audit recommendations and corrective-action plans.
Internal Controls and Risk Management
· Evaluate, document, and strengthen MTI’s financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
· Promote appropriate segregation of duties involving authorization, custody of assets, transaction processing, reconciliation, and financial review.
· Review access to banking, accounting, payroll, purchasing, and financial-information systems and recommend appropriate safeguards.
· Ensure that approval requirements, documentation standards, and financial review processes are consistently followed.
· Identify potential errors, irregularities, conflicts of interest, or misuse of institutional resources and report concerns promptly to the President.
· Recommend practical controls appropriate to MTI’s size, staffing structure, and operational needs.
· Periodically test key controls and document the results of those reviews.
Audit, Tax, and Compliance Coordination
· Serve as MTI’s principal internal coordinator for the annual financial-statement audit and other financial examinations.
· Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, reconciliations, and requested financial information.
· Coordinate preparation and review of the institution’s IRS Form 990 and other required financial or tax filings.
· Support compliance with grant requirements, donor restrictions, debt agreements, state and federal requirements, and applicable accreditation standards.
· Assist with financial aspects of regulatory reviews involving the U.S. Department of Education, ACCSC, the State of Michigan, veterans’ education agencies, grantors, and other oversight bodies.
· Maintain organized records that support audit readiness and regulatory compliance.
· Track audit findings, management-letter recommendations, and corrective actions through resolution.
Technical Oversight and Collaboration
· Provide accounting guidance and technical oversight to the Business Services Manager.
· Review financial work performed by the Business Services Manager and provide direction regarding corrections, documentation, accounting treatment, and process improvements.
· Help establish clear deadlines, closing procedures, reconciliation standards, and financial-reporting expectations.
· Provide training and technical support to employees who perform financial or administrative functions.
· Coordinate with service providers concerning payroll, benefits, and related financial reporting when necessary.
· Work collaboratively with institutional leadership while maintaining appropriate professional independence and financial integrity.
Working Conditions
This is a part-time position expected to require approximately 12–15 hours per week. The workload may vary during budget preparation, annual audits, tax filings, year-end closing, regulatory reviews, and during the initial employment period.
The position may be performed primarily remotely but requires regular communication with MTI leadership and periodic on-site work at the Cedarville campus. Some attendance at evening Board or committee meetings may be required.
