What you will be doing in the role of a Director, of External and Internal Communications

The Director of Executive and Internal Communications will play a critical role in shaping how employees and external audiences understand and engage with the organization’s mission, priorities and leadership. Serving as a trusted advisor to senior executives, this role will lead the development of executive speeches, presentations and written communications, while supporting media opportunities and speaking engagements that elevate leadership voices and advance the organization’s mission.

The Director will collaborate closely with HR and cross-functional partners to craft clear, consistent messaging around organizational priorities, culture and change initiatives. In addition, the role will develop and execute a comprehensive internal communications strategy that ensures employees are informed, aligned and connected across team

This individual will have the demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic organization, and have a track record of generating results. The successful candidate will have experience working with and providing counsel to senior executives and have the confidence and know-how to guide their communications activities. The role requires strong research, attention to detail and the ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging narratives.


We know you will have and be able to

  • Develop and execute internal and executive communications strategies aligned with Komen’s mission, leadership priorities and organizational goals.
  • Partner closely with the CEO to develop a strong understanding of their voice, priorities and communication style; proactively identify opportunities to elevate executive visibility and develop tailored briefing materials and preparation for speaking engagements, media interviews, meetings and other external and internal opportunities.
  • Create and manage key leadership communications, including executive speeches, presentations, talking points, staff and board updates, town halls and major organizational announcements.
  • Support executive visibility and thought leadership by identifying speaking opportunities, preparing leaders for conferences, events and media engagements.
  • Write, edit and produce a wide range of communications across internal and external channels, ensuring messaging is clear, accurate, compelling and aligned with leadership voice.
  • Manage internal communication channels and calendars, ensuring consistent, timely updates that keep employees informed, engaged and connected to organizational priorities.
  • Partner with HR, Mission, Marketing, PR and cross-functional teams to support major initiatives, change management efforts, employee engagement and culture-building communications.
  • Prepare and brief executives for external engagements, including media interviews, panel discussions and public appearances, in partnership with the PR team; conduct research and fact-checking to translate complex topics into clear, audience-focused messaging and ensure accuracy across communications.
  • Monitor communication effectiveness through feedback and engagement metrics and refine strategies to strengthen reach and impact.
  • Provide communications support across marketing and organizational initiatives, including storytelling, stakeholder messaging and mission-driven content.
  • On an as needed basis, create engaging copy for web pages, emails, fliers, invitations, brochures, social media, blog posts, articles, online advertising, direct mail and more.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


What you will bring to the table

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in internal and executive communications within a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to reflect executive voices and translate complex topics into clear, engaging content.
  • Proven experience partnering with CEO, senior leaders, communications teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver aligned, impactful messaging.
  • Strong research, interviewing, and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize information and generate original ideas for internal and external communications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills, capable of engaging employees, executives, donors, and community partners with professionalism and tact.
  • Skilled in managing multiple projects, prioritizing competing deadlines, and maintaining accuracy and attention to detail under tight timelines.
  • Experienced in internal communications platforms and tools, including intranet systems, newsletters, digital messaging, and town hall technologies.
  • Collaborative team player who incorporates feedback, leads effective meetings, and fosters alignment across departments.

  • Master’s degree in English, Literature, journalism or communications preferred.

  • Competitive salary of $97,000 to $124,000/annually, exact compensation ranges are based on a range of factors including but not limited to the labor market, job level, internal equity, and budget. Offers given will take into consideration the candidate’s skills, education, experience, geographic location, and other necessary credentials.

Komen provides a remote and/or home-based working environment for all active employees. Komen defines remote as the ability to work from any physical location within the U.S. where an employee can perform specified work duties without disruption or distraction. Komen defines home-based roles as positions that are required to reside in a specific market.
