Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent experience in professional, community, or youth development settings.
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience creating and implementing effective outreach plans
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multicultural communities and with historically marginalized populations
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Availability Tuesday-Saturday, with flexibility for occasional evenings; this is an in-person role.
- Proven ability to manage multiple partnerships and projects simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, or Japanese.
- Experience in public health, social services, nonprofit community organizing, or related fields
- Knowledge of Western Addition/Japantown history, culture, and current community landscape
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Community Programs, the Associate Director, Outreach & Engagement leads community outreach and engagement efforts for Buchanan YMCA’s Community Wellness Program. The role works collaboratively with staff, community school leaders, and local partners to develop and promote programs that support health equity, wellness, family engagement, and community priorities throughout District 5.
As a visible representative of Buchanan YMCA, the Associate Director builds relationships, strengthens community partnerships, and connects residents to programs and resources. This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, a commitment to inclusive and culturally responsive practices, and a passion for supporting healthy, thriving communities.
This position is on-site and requires availability to work Tuesday-Saturday, including occasional evenings as needed.
Job Responsibilities
Program Supervision & Development
- Oversee the planning, supervision, and daily operations of Buchanan Y’s Community Wellness programs
- Hire, train, coach, and supervise part-time wellness staff and volunteers
- Ensure effective program implementation aligned with YMCA of San Francisco’s strategic priorities, with a focus on safety, quality, and fiscal responsibility.
- Collaborate with health and wellness, health initiatives, and active older adults staff in developing and facilitating community wellness classes and workshops
- Ensure thoughtful integration of support services, including extended learning, family engagement and support, and health and mental health services.
- Organize and implement community events, meetings, and outreach activities.
Administrative, Fiscal & Compliance Oversight
- Develop strong partnerships with funders, including the San Francisco Human Rights Commission and the Department of Disability and Aging Services
- Maintain accurate records, including attendance, emergency forms, and required documentation.
- Ensure compliance with YMCA policies and procedures
- Assist with budget development, monitor expenditures, and manage contracts and agreements.
- Support data collection and reporting for grants and funding requirements.
- Apply problem-solving and change management strategies to improve program effectiveness.
Community Engagement & Collaboration:
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with community members, partners, and stakeholders.
- Raise community concerns to relevant parties and advocate for community needs.
- Identify and engage community partners, small businesses, and local organizations.
- Represent Buchanan Y at neighborhood coalitions, public forums, health fairs, and community planning meetings to build strong visibility and partnerships.
- Develop outreach campaigns that align with Buchanan’s vision to be a hub for holistic health and wellness, including targeted initiatives for seniors, youth, families, and underserved groups.
Program Growth & Impact:
- Work with internal program leads to co-create new community-driven health, wellness, and prevention programs based on local needs and priorities.
- Collaborate with the Marketing/Communications team to create culturally relevant outreach materials and digital content that effectively engage diverse audiences.
- Track participation, impact metrics, and feedback to inform continuous improvement and share outcomes with leadership, the Advisory Board, and the community.
Community Input
- Support assessment of community needs and assets, and oversee integration of services and programming for students, families, and community members.
- Gather community input on projects, events, and communications that involve or may impact the community.
- Establish regular listening sessions and community feedback loops to ensure programming remains responsive and inclusive.
Work Environment
This position works primarily in person at the Buchanan YMCA and throughout the community, including schools, partner organizations, and local events. The role involves regular interaction with community members, families, staff, volunteers, and community partners. Some evening and weekend work may be required to support programs, meetings, and special events.
Physical Demands
This role requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, speak, and use a computer for extended periods. The position may require transporting and setting up program materials and lifting items up to 25 pounds

Salary Description
The Associate Director, Outreach & Engagement position offers a competitive salary of $72,000 – $78,0000 per year, based on qualifications and experience and is aligned with current salary benchmarking. Compensation is contingent upon grant fund approval and program budget availability.
