Job Description

Purpose of the Role

Youth Frontiers is a youth mentoring program for female children and young people, aged 10-17 years, in contact with the criminal justice and child protection systems in the Fairfield LGA. The program aims to engage young people’s strengths by building skills and experience through mentoring support. This program supports children and young women who have had some contact with the justice system, or whose families have been involved in the justice system and need support.

The Youth Frontier’s program delivers quality mentoring, including supporting children to meet their case plan goals, connections with peers, support witheducation, assistance with attending appointments, or connecting with other service providers, development of life skills, building confidence andresilience, and connections with family, community, and culture. The Mentors will develop and maintain quality and meaningful relationships with mentees for up to 12 months.

This relationship will involve weekly one-on-one or group mentoring sessions with mentees, along with engaging mentees in group activities organised and/or run by the Program Coordinators.

Key Responsibilities for the Youth Frontier Mentors are:

Develop and maintain quality and meaningful relationships with mentees.

Support mentees in developing healthy relationships within their community.

Assist mentees in accessing services within their community.

Promote in mentees a sense of choice and control (self-determination) in their lives.

Encourageresilienceand the ability to tackle major life challenges.

Discourage mentees from engaging in risky behaviour.

Serve as a positive role model, modelling desirable attributes such asresilience, self-determination, high self-esteem, and motivation.

Support mentees in developing practical and personal life skills in line with their goals.

Establish and maintain appropriate boundaries in line with policies and procedures.

Assess safety and well-being of mentees during engagement and report all concerns to the Program Coordinator.

Work with the coordinator to support program needs.

Monitor and record client progress (e.g., client participation, client intake survey, case notes).

Desired Skills and Experience

Applicants need to be 18 years or above, have a current driver’s license, have a current working with children’s check, and can commit to working with these vulnerable children for a minimum of six months. Applicants must have proof of COVID-19 vaccinations, including a booster, and will be required to undergo a police check.
