Position Overview:

A Volunteer Manager oversees all aspects of volunteer programs. Responsibilities include recruiting, onboarding, scheduling, supporting, and retaining volunteers for the Houston Humane Society which supports the operations and special events of the Houston Humane Society (HHS). Also, represent HHS in a professional manner to further enhance HHS’ presence in the community.

Direct supervision over all volunteers at HHS.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Recruit, educate, and train volunteers to provide a strong and supportive resource for HHS programs and special events.
Hold volunteer orientations regularly to ensure that volunteers are adequately trained and knowledgeable in the duties they perform.
Solicit and coordinate corporate volunteer activities.
Coordinate, direct and manage the activities of volunteers.
Works to ensure that there is an adequate number of volunteers to fill the requests of staff. e.g., daily dog walkers, clinic recovery, mobile adoptions, summer camp, Pet Pantry, rescue/transports and special events inside and outside of the shelter.
Interact with staff at all levels, filling requests and addressing any issues or concerns that may arise.
Address any volunteer issues or concerns that may arise.
Update and maintain volunteer training handouts and materials.
Develop and maintain volunteer procedures as needed and requested.
Creation, implementation, and evaluation of new programs within the volunteer department
Schedule continuing education classes on a regular basis for volunteers, e.g., dog training classes, disease control/information, grooming tips, etc.
Prepare weekly informational emails to volunteers to keep all apprised of shelter needs, events and efforts being made.
Prepare monthly volunteer activity reports for the Board of Directors
Prepare and maintain volunteer information including but not limited to name, address, volunteer interests, and availability utilizing Golden (Volunteer Program).
Create, implement, and maintain a scheduled system in Golden.
Create reports on volunteer activities and hours.
Give volunteer outreach presentations to groups on request.
Coordinates volunteer recognition and appreciation events and activities.
Perform other duties as requested by Shelter Director.

Qualifications & Skills:

Minimum High School Diploma or GED, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in managing and coordinating the activities of large groups of people, particularly volunteer groups and programs
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for effective report preparation.
Ability to learn and use unfamiliar software systems.
Comfortable in presenting volunteer orientation and training classes to large groups.
Proficient in managing multiple tasks, organizing data, and keeping detailed records, with strong time management capabilities.
Have strong interpersonal skills, including dealing with people of all backgrounds, skills, and personalities.
Possess a positive attitude and maintain a constructive outlook, managing multiple responsibilities in a busy setting.
Comfortable handling many kinds of animals and educating volunteers on: the correct methods of safely handling, leashing, and walking dogs; safely handling cats, rabbits, or other types of animals.
Flexible and adaptable, ready to adjust to changes in priorities and job duties in a dynamic setting including working weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
Ability to collaborate effectively, supporting co-workers and contributing to a team-oriented environment.
Strict protection of organizational information, ensuring privacy in all internal communications.
Professional representation of the Houston Humane Society in all dealings with the public, partners, and within the organization.
Acknowledgment and respect for organizational structures and reporting lines, including appropriate escalation of issues.
Willing to uphold and support the mission of the Houston Humane Society, its programs, and services.
Valid Driver’s License.
