This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Executive Vice President & COO, the Vice President of Membership & Healthy Living is responsible for the strategic development of the membership and healthy living experience. The position encompasses the Y’s philosophy to deliver programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The organization has prioritized community health and well-being through its strategic plan and has provided resources to deliver a modern experience across 25+ branches. The key deliverables will be developing strategies and tactics that improve the overall experience resulting in membership growth.

Membership Overview: over the last 5 years, membership has grown from $20M to over $40M as the result of an engaged staff team and a well-designed recovery strategy. We implemented a fanactical approach around fundamentals that has now become the standard across the organization. Our plan also invested over $30M in capital funds into improving the core experience at 23 of our 25 branches, with the last two beginning active construction over the next 3 months. Our final step was to invest into improvements in our integrated technology focused on the digital experience with a new CRM.

Healthy Living Overview: we have also had a keen focus on Personal Training and Group Exercise quality improvements leading to growth of Personal Training from $1.2M to $2.2M and Group Exercise surpassing industry best-in-class participation, format variety, and instructor certifications. Both have strong training and recruitment strategies that have built a strong talent pipeline.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Sport Mgt, business or equivalent
  • 10 or more years of management experience in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency
  • Extensive understanding of Y operations and the membership model
  • Significant experience with membership management systems and e-commerce platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral communication and writing skills
  • Possess a high level of organizational knowledge, experience and proficiency
  • Ability to successfully lead, recruit and develop staff and volunteers of all levels
  • Possess and demonstrate commitment and passion for mission-centered objectives
  • Master the art of influence and relationship building with diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrate innovative thinking and change capacity
  • Knowledge of integrated technology
  • YUSA Organizational Leader Status preferred

Essential Functions

  • Deepen alignment of membership and healthy living efforts to improve the Y experience.
  • Develop and execute strategies that result in unit and revenue growth focused on membership sales, onboarding, and long-term retention across all branch locations.
  • Proficient in data analysis, fiscal management, and small group facilitation.
  • Responsible for the overall development of the membership experience.
  • Providing strategic leadership and implementing industry best practices.
  • Develop a data-driven culture with proven results with specific KPIs for membership growth and revenue targets.
  • Engage executive-level staff in a membership and fitness-focused business model.
  • Develop and lead a strong staff team to support association membership and healthy living strategies.
  • Assist with the membership and healthy living budgeting process.
  • Integrate community health and healthy living into the membership model.
  • Train membership and wellness staff in sales and recovery strategies.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
