POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Youth Development Coordinator, a Tumbling Coach is responsible for leading and supervising youth obstacle-based movement classes that promote strength, agility, confidence, and character development in alignment with YMCA values. Coaches ensure a safe, engaging, and structured environment while delivering high-quality programming consistent with YMCA standards.
This role supports youth development by fostering physical literacy, positive behavior, and personal growth through movement-based instruction.

KNOW HOW:
- Experience working with children ages 2-5 preferred
- Background in athletics, gymnastics, parkour, movement training, PE, swim instruction, or related field preferred
- Strong understanding of safety supervision and spotting techniques (training provided)
- Ability to manage group behavior in a positive, structured manner
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
- Completion of YMCA onboarding
PRIMARY ACTIVITIES:
- Lead and assist Tumbling classes following program curriculum and safety standards
- Supervise obstacle use and provide appropriate spotting and instruction
- Maintain appropriate instructor-to-participant ratios at all times
- Encourage skill development, resilience, and positive sportsmanship
- Adapt instruction based on age and ability level
- Inspect equipment and ensure proper setup before and after classes
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians as needed
- Document incidents, injuries, or behavioral concerns according to YMCA policy
- Support special events, demonstrations, and promotional activities when requested
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand, walk, and actively move for 60-minute class sessions
- Ability to demonstrate movement skills (jumping, hanging, balancing, crawling)
- Ability to lift, move, or adjust equipment (up to 40–50 lbs)
- Ability to provide physical spotting and assist participants safely
- Quick reaction time and spatial awareness to prevent injury
SAFETY:
- Maintain constant visual supervision of assigned participants
- Enforce YMCA safety standards and program rules
- Use proper spotting techniques at all times
- Identify and correct unsafe behavior immediately
- Participate in required staff trainings and refreshers
- Safety of participants is the highest priority of this position.
- All accidents or injuries must be immediately recorded on the YMCA Accident/Incident Report and submitted to the Director/Coordinator.
DRESS CODE:
- YMCA-approved athletic attire
- Closed-toe athletic footwear (unless barefoot instruction is required by program standards)
- No loose jewelry
- Professional, movement-appropriate clothing
ENVIRONMENT:
- Indoor youth activity space with obstacle-based equipment
- Moderate noise level during classes
- Active, fast-paced environment requiring high engagement
- Evening and weekend availability may be required
- Interaction with youth, parents, and fellow staff regularly

Employees and volunteers who directly supervise consumers will:
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
- Attend required abuse risk management training.
- Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
- Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Pay: $14.00 – $16.00 per hour
