General Description
This is a 1.0 non-exempt staff position at the Division of Indian Work. The program is designed to provide services to youth ages 16 to 22 who were placed in foster care by a county or tribe prior to 18 and for at least 30 consecutive days after the age of 14.
The program provides activities that will enhance the youth’s knowledge of becoming an adult, such as financial literacy, transportation, goal setting, family reunification, healthy relationships, and living independently, just to name a few. The ILS coach is responsible for providing supervision and programming for all group activities, transportation needs, and collaborating with other STAY-C programs, tribes, outside agencies, and counties to help participants with successful transition to adulthood.Additionally, the Division of Indian Work provides culturally based support systems to American Indian youth and families, encouraging educational, psychological, social, and spiritual growth in a multi-cultural urban environment.
Responsibilities
•Help plan and facilitate independent living skills lessons, recreational and cultural activities for eligible American Indian youth ages 16-22.
•Provide supervision and training in group activities as assigned.
•Monitor clients’ caseloads by maintaining youth files.
•Provide transportation to and from all program activities and meetings as needed.
•Attend training and meetings as required by the Department of Human Services and Program Manager.
•Provide direct case management services to eligible youth.
•Facilitate Youth Leadership Council (YLC) meetings.
•Participate in recruitment, outreach, and advocacy efforts.
•Prepare grant reports, monthly reports, and other reports as assigned.
•Recruit, attend, and supervise retreats, including YLC training retreat, Foster Child and Youth Day on the Hill, DHS STAY-C training retreats, and others as needed.
Qualifications
Associate’s degree or equivalent work/job experience.
•Experience, competence, and sensitivity in working with American Indian people and youth who have foster care experience.
•Good communication skills; written and oral.
•Good organizational skills.
•Knowledge of group facilitation.
•Valid Minnesota driver’s license.
•Must be able to work a flexible schedule to support youth programming, including occasional evenings, weekends, community events, and overnight retreats.
•Must model violence-free behavior.
•Must model the 7 Grandfather teachings.
