Overview
The ideal candidate will have a natural passion for math and intricate knowledge of assets, liabilities, profit and loss, taxes, and other financial transactions within an organization. The staff accountant will play an important support role, clarifying the financial outlook of our company with precise, proactive measures and attention to detail. Objectives of this role
Support the organization with timely and accurate financial information for making decisions
Ensure compliance with all financial laws and regulations for nonprofits
Monitor policies and procedures for assigned departments, and identify and suggest improvements for accounting reports and procedures
Continue professional education by participating in webinars, workshops, and networking events
Support the Finance Department with modeling projects and is an important resource and backup to the Payroll function.
Responsibilities
Reconcile all balance sheet accounts each month and post transactions and journal entries as needed for the month-end close
Prepare the monthly financial statements including commentary for operational management account results and variances
Process accounts payable transactions using Bill.com to include coding invoices, ensuring timely approval and payments by the management team, and reconciling vendor statements
Process accounts receivable transactions to include creating invoices and recording deposits for donations and services
Provide backup support for bi-weekly payroll processing and assist with payroll review
Track funds with donor restrictions
Assist with creating the annual budget and forecasting cash flow
Prepare year-end schedules for the annual financial audit and tax returns
Prepare and file the annual IRS 1099 forms
Prepare and file the sales tax returns
Prepare and file the annual business tax returns and the related welfare exemption
Maintain all electronic and paper files in an organized manner
Assist with writing procedure manuals for all responsibilities in this job description
Prepare special financial reports, when requested by senior managers, by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends
Other duties as assigned.
Required skills and qualifications
Professional experience in accounting, such as internship or staff role
Knowledge of accounting and corporate finance principles and procedures
Ability to multitask, prioritize, and organize effectively
Ability to maintain confidentiality of company and client information
Desire to continue professional growth through training
Experience with Microsoft Office software with a minimum of intermediate experience with Excel
Experience with at least one accounting software package
Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally to an audience who has different levels of financial literacy.
Preferred skills and qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in accounting, business accounting, or finance
Certified public accountant (CPA) license or equivalent
Experience with nonprofit accounting and allocations
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) including a thorough understanding of debits and credits
Experience with QuickBooks Online
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work with minimal supervision and direction.
