About This Role:
The Director of the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum providesdynamicleadershipto the planning, organization, staffing, and museum operations for a complex of 17 replica buildings representing life during the boom years of the first Spindletop oil boom, . The Director works closely with the administration of Lamar University, museum staff, and volunteers to refine, develop, and implement programs for the museum’s fundraising, exhibitions, collections management, educational activities, events, and community outreach.
What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities:
Works in conjunction with university administration to develop the strategic direction and establish initiatives to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local, statewide, national, and international awareness and prominence.
Manages, secures, and maintains the property and facilities of the museum, as well as the collections held in public trust.
Directs the museum’s operations, including development,educationand public programming, finance, external communications, event management, and staffing.
Manage, lead, and develop part-time staff, volunteers, contractors, and consultants.
Develop an effective communications plan to raise the profile of the museum.
Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Spindletop Museum.
Effectively coordinates with Chartwells, LU Police, Events Management, Risk Management, and other LU departments to create consistent programming for our on-campus and off-campus community.
Establish strong partnerships in the community.
Enhances Spindletop’s public image to expand interest and support for various entertainment and educational efforts.
Manage eatery and dining venues for the greater Southeast Texas Community.
Excellent customer service and emphasis oncommunity engagement.
Ability to provide strongleadership, vision, and strategic direction to staff and volunteers.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, as well as to work successfully with museum staff, volunteers, and various public constituencies.
Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums, non-profits, or similar organizations, as well as a history of involvement in relevant professional organizations.
Knowledge of fundraising and development with grant writing abilities.
Demonstrated excellence in writing, public speaking, and computer use.
Proven ability to work cooperatively, diplomatically, and effectively with volunteers and in community relations and outreach capacities.
Competence in managing museum operations, including personnel matters.
Successfully develop, manage, and maintain an annual operating budget.
Strong business management skills, including planning, time management, and decision-making skills. Working knowledge of spreadsheets, databases, email, calendar/scheduling, and word processing software.
Physical Requirement:
The physical requirements for a museum director include the ability to walk and stand for extended periods, navigate stairs, handle and manage objects including fragile artifacts, and use
tools and equipment
for exhibition setup. Physical stamina to work long hours during special events, good visual acuity to inspect artworks and use computer screens, and adequate hearing for
effective communication
. Additionally, the role may require occasional moderate lifting of items and include extended sitting and repetitive motions, along with handling detailed administrative tasks.
