Join our skilled heritage crafts team and help protect and preserve some of our most important historic buildings and sites. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced craftsperson to use traditional building skills to deliver high-quality conservation repairs.
Your working pattern is Monday – Thursday from 7:30am – 4:00pm and Friday 7:30am – 1:00pm

What It’s Like To Work Here
Based within a Specialist Crafts Centre at Hardwick Hall Derbyshire, you’ll play a key role in maintaining historic fabric for future generations. As a mason, you’ll regularly be working at different National Trust places across the Midlands. You’ll also support the development of apprentices and raise the profile of the National Trust’s in-house heritage craft skills work through on-site conversations, events and involvement with media/social media.
There are National Trust vans available to use for traveling to different sites.
What You’ll Be Doing
In this role, you’ll carry out specialist conservation and repair work using traditional masonry techniques, helping to protect and preserve historic buildings for future generations. You’ll ensure the correct materials, methods and conservation standards are applied, maintaining the character and integrity of each property.
You’ll assess repair requirements and make informed decisions on the most appropriate conservation approach, working closely with surveyors, conservation colleagues, property teams and contractors to deliver high-quality outcomes.
You’ll also ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and in line with health and safety requirements. As an experienced member of the team, you’ll support, coach and mentor apprentices, sharing your skills and knowledge to help develop the next generation of craftspeople.
Who We’re Looking For
To deliver this role successfully, you’ll need:
- an experienced specialist mason with a craft qualification (NVQ Level 2, City & Guilds, or equivalent experience)
- strong practical experience and advanced craft skills, with a solid understanding of traditional building repair techniques and current conservation practices
- someone who can work using their own judgement and maintain high standards of workmanship
- a team player with confident communication skills and able to engage with the public and fellow workers
- good knowledge of health and safety requirements
- the ability to maintain accurate records and use basic IT systems
- a full UK driving licence
