We are seeking a Senior Legal Counsel for one of our clients. Someonewhowill play a critical role in advising company’s leadership on legal and regulatory matters, ensuring adherence to German and EU education, corporate, and data privacy laws, while supporting contracts, institutional partnerships, and compliance. This is a strategic role that blends traditional legal counsel responsibilities with sector-specific insight.

Key Responsibilities:

Legal Advisory & Risk Management

Advise leadership on all legal matters affecting the institution, particularly in education, corporate law, university real estate developments and nonprofit collaboration.

Identify potential legal risks and propose mitigation strategies.

Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with German higher education laws, particularly those relevant to private institutions and state recognition of programs.

Oversee compliance with GDPR and student data protection regulations.

Monitor and implement changes in applicable laws and regulations, as well as develop internal regulation for higher transparency and efficiency.

Contract Management

Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts, student enrollment agreements, affiliation/MoU agreements with the university, and real estate development/management agreements and other service provider agreements.

Support licensing agreements, academic partnerships, and joint ventures.

Governance & Institutional Policy

Provide legal input on institutional policies

Collaborate with academic leadership in company’s affiliate institutions to ensure policies align with affiliation and joint venture requirements.

Liaison with Authorities & University Partners

Serve as the primary legal contact with external regulators and company’s partner institutions’ legal or administrative offices.

Support audits, site visits, and governmental inspections where legal expertise is required.

What you bring:

Core qualifications

Fully qualified German lawyer (Zweites Staatsexamen) with good standing to practice law in Germany.

Minimum 5-8 years of legal experience, ideally in the education, public-private partnerships, or commercial sector.

Strong knowledge of German higher education law, administrative law, and data protection (GDPR).

Experience of contract negotiation and stakeholder management.

Fluency in German and English is required.

Willingness to spend more than 75% of time on university premises

Preferred qualifications

Experience working with or in private universities, Fachhochschulen, or educational startups.

Understanding of accreditation and quality assurance processes in Germany.

Experience dealing with complex Real Estate transactions

Ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal professionals.

Proactive, detail-oriented, and collaborative in a dynamic environment.
