Role Summary/Objective
The Senior Financial Planning Analyst role is responsible for maintaining and enhancing our nonprofit organization’s budget and forecast models, providing accurate and timely financial insights to support strategic decision making.
In addition to core financial planning and analysis responsibilities, this position supports complex accounting processes, prepares monthly financial reports, assists with audits and monitoring, and works closely with program and finance staff to ensure compliance with federal, state, and private funding requirements. The role requires strong analytical capabilities, advanced Excel proficiency, and a solid understanding of accounting principles within a grant-funded environment

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Maintain organizational consolidated budget model.
- Participate in the annual budgeting process.
- Update and manage monthly financial forecasts.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards.
- Create and manage the organization’s cash flow forecast.
- Use advanced Excel skills to continuously enhance and update budget and forecast models, ensuring timely, accurate, and efficient financial reporting.
- Develop and present financial performance metrics to leadership, including but not limited to budget-to-actuals, dashboards, KPIs, and variance analyses that support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Continuously improve the automation of the financial and reporting process; redesign key financial processes and procedures when necessary.
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly financial statements, grant reports, and variance analyses.
- Maintain general ledger accuracy by reviewing transactions for coding, allowability, and completeness.
- Prepare and/or oversee complex journal entries, including GL imports and allocations.
- Assist in the setup and review of new vendors and customers, ensuring accurate system entry and proper documentation.
Grants Management, Compliance, Audit & Monitoring Support
- Understand, review, and analyze grant backup documentation, cost allocations, and supporting schedules for accuracy and compliance on budget usage, allowable costs, forecasting, and financial reporting requirements
- Track funder requirements, program income, restricted funding, etc.
- Support in the preparation of financial schedules, backup documentation, and support in annual audits, federal/state monitoring, and/or site visits.
- Assist with the financial components of subrecipient monitoring processes.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Advanced Excel skills are mandatory and will be assessed during the interview process (pivot tables, complex formulas, lookups, etc.).
- Solid experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Thorough understanding of finance and accounting principles.
- Strong financial acumen.
- Knowledge of GAAP and FASB standards.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance program staff.
Preferred Skills/Abilities
- Nonprofit and fund accounting experience.
- Knowledge of federal grant compliance (2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance).
- Experience with MIP Fund Accounting or other nonprofit accounting systems.
- Experience creating financial dashboards or data visualization tools.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- Minimum 4 years of experience in financial planning and analysis or related finance function.
