The Senior Director of Finance leads the financial strategy and operations of The Apollo Theater Foundation. Reporting to the CEO, this senior leader is responsible for safeguarding financial integrity, operational excellence, and strategic alignment with the organization’s mission and goals. The role oversees budgeting, reporting, audits, and compliance and works closely with the Executive Team and Board of Directors. The Senior Director also manages key external relationships (e.g., auditors, banks) and directly supervises the Finance Department.

This is a hybrid position requiring in-office attendance on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Oversee all accounting, bookkeeping, and financial transactions for the organization, in collaboration with external accounting firms

Manage accurate and timely reporting to funding bodies, including regular financial reporting on renovation progress and compliance with stipulations.

Ensure that transactions are mapped to appropriate accounts and classifications to facilitate the grant reporting process.

Supervise day-to-day financial transactions carried out by staff and contractors, including but not limited to invoicing for earned revenue and bill payment.

Communicating monthly financial reporting materials, analysis, and metrics for the Executive Team and Board.

Oversee systems integration and compliance for financial tracking and revenue with the Development team.

Drive a collaborative annual budgeting process.

Lead correspondence and processes with external auditors.

Develop and manage cash flow projections and planning.

Develop a financial strategy for responsible growth in collaboration with the Executive Team, including leading the development of multi-year projections and financial scenarios and assessing initial forays into asset management and low-risk short-term investments.

Work with staff to manage revenue and expenses, to assess budget implications and adjust fiscal year forecasts as needed.

Maintain overall fiscal policies and procedures, monitor all internal controls, identify areas of vulnerability, and execute risk mitigation measures.

Responsible for training and supervision of The Apollo’s Finance Department.

Delegating tasks to the Director of Finance for seamless execution.

 

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting; MBA is strongly preferred.

 CPA is a plus.

A minimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience in financial management within a nonprofit organization.

Strong understanding of capital campaign governance, including restricted fund compliance and donor reporting.

Experience with city- or government-funded projects is a plus.

Knowledge of GAAP, AICPA codes, and best financial practices in a nonprofit setting.

Strong background in financial management, including budgeting, financial analysis, and strategic planning.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial and operational information to non-technical stakeholders.

Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Ability to self-direct and move projects forward by recognizing when to involve other staff and leadership.
