Hours:

Current business hours are primarily Monday through Friday 8:00-4:30 pm. The organization has near and long term plans to increase programming and hours including evening and weekends. The Safety & Belonging Coordinator will be required to adapt hours/shift accordingly. Currently this position will require a varied schedule to support the opening and closing of the building.

Organizational Summary

My Friend’s Place (MFP) is a nonprofit organization in Hollywood, CA. MFP “is a community that cultivates growth and opportunity for young people impacted by homelessness.” We recognize the experience of youth homelessness as a social, racial and economic justice issue. We are resolute in our commitment to uplift all youth experiencing homelessness while rigorously, continuously, and concretely aligning our trauma-informed service delivery and organizational framework with guiding principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Our crisis resource drop-in center provides emergency, health, mental health, creative arts, case management, and education & employment services to nearly 1200 youth and young adults experiencing homelessness annually. We have been at the forefront of addressing youth homelessness in Los Angeles for 37 years. Our comprehensive, multi-disciplinary program model is innovative and replicated in drop-in centers locally and nationally. We are a data informed organization committed to continuous learning and development.

Position Summary

The Safety & Belonging Coordinator is a new role within the organization and will support the reimagination of the concepts and practices of safety and belonging in our community healing space. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Programs, the Safety & Belonging Coordinator is responsible for working across all programs in order to hospitably meet the needs of young people visiting the center daily. The Safety & Belonging Coordinator must be familiar and comfortable working with issues related to street survival & homelessness including substance abuse, mental health distress, co-occurring disorders, severe behavioral health and complex trauma. They must have the ability and interest to work professionally with young adults with severe trauma histories and appreciate that the behavioral expression of pain can include challenging, even hostile, behaviors, sometimes directed at staff. They must endorse a philosophy of care, grounded in the Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency (ARC) Framework, that believes that safety is best achieved through connection and that when a young person is struggling, they are to be pulled in closer and not pushed further away. This position requires excellent judgment and strong situational awareness skills.

Essential Responsibilities:

The following reflects My Friend’s Place definition of essential functions for this role, but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned. The essential responsibilities are a balance between direct youth care and coordination. Duties and responsibilities can be assigned/reassigned by leadership as necessary and to address reasonable accommodations. Working across all program domains and primarily with the Safe Haven Team:

Create and actively promote a comfortable, welcoming and healing environment where every young person is treated with dignity and respect and the values of community are promoted.
Support young people to complete the check-in process when accessing on-site services, including security check.
Identify youth who appear to be experiencing distress in the milieu and intervene proactively so that all youth can remain safely in the Safe Haven community.
Diffuse tense situations and address potential conflicts through a prevention approach.
Using established org framework and protocols, make in-the-moment decisions about responding to high intensity crisis situations that could include concerns for overdose, suicide, homicide, child abuse, vandalism, threats and physical assault.
Employ a customer service orientation in order to anticipate and respond to biopsychosocial needs.
Engage and provide support promoting positive attachment and prosocial behavior.
Establish caring and trusting rapport with youth and young adults experiencing homelessness.
Uphold program and community guidelines and address behaviors with trauma informed approaches.
Provide supportive counseling on a wide variety of issues.
Implement, adhere to and support all safety measures to ensure a safe environment, including children and animal companions.

Ensure the daily usability of the metal detection system and troubleshoot as needed, coordinating with the vendor.
Coordinate our Reflect & Strategize (R&S) process for young people who were asked to step away from services following a setback or incident and are seeking to return using restorative healing practices..
Coordinate safe exits and arrivals for staff when an incident requires it.
Coordinate the completion of incident and injury reports when required.
Coordinate our partner relationships to ensure that safe use supplies are available, uplifting a harm reduction model.
Be in rotation for opening and closing the building, including assigned after-hours crisis.

Working in collaboration with org leadership:

Train and reinforce the skills of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (Crisis Prevention Institute).
Provide milieu based safety and belonging coaching to staff and volunteers to assist.
Monitor overall staff safety competencies, provide direct feedback and engage managers when there are opportunities for continuous learning and improvement.
Onboard a multidisciplinary team, developing materials and delivering training on topics related to hospitality and safety.
Understand all details of emergency procedures and support training of staff.
Facilitate debrief sessions with the staff team after a major incident using the non-violent crisis intervention model with attention to continuous learning and improvement.
Participate in morning huddles and small care teams, as appropriate.
Participate in program leadership meetings as assigned.
Participate in local or other planning meetings as assigned, serving as a spokesperson for the organization when called upon.
Maintain open, productive communication with program leadership.
Ensure appropriate data collection for different constituency groups.

Qualifications:

Required Experience:

Minimum of 2 years equivalent hospitality & safety experience.

Mandatory Requirements:

Reliable transportation, valid California driver’s license and auto insurance, and driving record in alignment with organizational requirements
Strong interest in nonprofit leadership
Successful completion of background screening

MFP is a dynamic environment and the work requires moderate to high activity level. Technology Skills Required:

Hands on knowledge of record keeping in a digitized environment, expertise in text messaging and other digital communication methods.
Equipment used – desktop/ laptop computer, electronic mail system, telephone and cell phone.
Proficiency in Google suite software and various data management systems including HMIS/Clarity.

Preferred:

Lived Experience: Personal and/or close relational experience with housing instability/homelessness including but not limited to the intersectional experience with youth homelessness such as juvenile or adult incarceration, foster care, family conflict and post-traumatic growth.
Bilingual Spanish preferred.
