The Orlando Science Center is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Retail Manager to lead the operations of our gift shop. The Retail Manager will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations, managing staff, handling cash, receiving merchandise, and ensuring a positive guest experience. This full-time position requires a dynamic leader who can maintain a high standard of guest service and sales floor merchandising while leading a team of retail sales associates.
Essential Functions
Leadership and Supervision:
Train, supervise, and develop retail associates.
Manage the daily operational scheduling for retail staff.
Assist the Director as needed in conducting regular team meetings to communicate goals, provide updates, and foster a collaborative environment.
The Retail Manager is expected to spend the majority of their time on the sales floor, actively leading the team, assisting guests, and ensuring smooth daily operations. This is not an office-based role; maintaining an active leadership presence is essential.
Guest Service:
Warmly greet all guests, creating a welcoming and friendly environment with prompt, efficient, and pleasant service.
Ensure all guests receive prompt, efficient, and pleasant service in person and on the phone.
Manage guest inquiries and resolve issues promptly and courteously.
Promote and educate guests on the benefits of membership.
Operations Management:
Oversee the opening and closing of the gift shop, including inventory management, receiving, pricing, and merchandising.
Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the gift shop.
Troubleshoot POS issues and ensure all associates are familiar with merchandise to assist guests effectively.
Visual Merchandising:
Propose visual merchandising strategies that align with the Science Center’s themes and exhibits to the Director and upon approval, execute changes.
Ensure the gift shop is always clean, welcoming, and visually appealing.
Financial Management:
Responsible for workstation reconciliation and managing financial transactions, including cash, credit cards, passes, and coupons.
Follow all department policies and procedures for cash handling, safety, and security.
Promotions and Sales:
Stay informed on promotions, coupons, and advertising campaigns, as well as merchandise available for sale.
Monitor sales performance and assist Director in developing strategies to achieve sales targets.
Communication:
Meet with the Director of Retail Services regularly to report on all aspects of retail and maintain open communication regarding day-to-day operations.
Provide quality service and detailed reporting while functioning in a Manager on Duty (MOD) capacity.
Emergency and On-Call Duties:
Always be on the sales floor to assist the team and address any issues as they arise.
Be on call 24 hours for vacant shifts and/or emergency situations.
Other Duties:
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma. A degree (Associate or above) in a related field.
Experience & Certifications: A minimum of 3 years in a managerial role and experience in a high-volume retail or hospitality industry.
Preferred Qualifications
College degree in related field.
2-4 years of experience in a high-volume guest service industry.
Experience in a non-profit environment preferred.
Must be meticulous and able to utilize different computer applications effectively.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position is responsible for the hiring, training, and development of part-time staff members. The Director of Retail Services is responsible overall for the retail department, and the Manager serves as the frontline presence.
Physical Demands
Ability to remain in a stationary position.
Moves throughout the museum.
Ascends/descends stairs throughout the museum.
Ascends/descends ladders or other equipment to perform various tasks.
Observes and reacts to the needs of guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
Communicates and exchanges accurate information with guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners in a variety of formats including in-person, electronically, and over the phone.
Operates a computer and/or office equipment efficiently and accurately.
Manipulates and moves components weighing up to 50 pounds, including those that may be low to the ground or above eye level.
Occasionally work in outdoor environments.
Frequently works in indoor environments.
Coping with demands and stresses associated with job and work environment.
