Position Summary 

The Relationship Manager plays a vital role in advancing Heart for Africa’s mission by cultivating relationships with mid-level and major donors, as well as identifying and securing support from new prospects. Reporting to the Director of Development, this position will work collaboratively with the development team to design and implement strategies that achieve annual fundraising objectives. 

The Relationship Manager will actively manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors, with a focus on deepening engagement and increasing financial investment. This individual will serve as a key point of contact for donors, ensuring consistent communication, personalized stewardship, and meaningful partnership experiences. The ideal candidate demonstrates initiative, strong interpersonal skills, and a passion for building lasting donor relationships that fuel the growth and impact of HFA’s ministry. 

This role requires travel approximately 50% of the time, both domestically and internationally, to meet with donors, attend events, and visit Project Canaan in Eswatini, Africa.  

Responsibilities  

Collaborate with the Director of Development to create and execute the annual fundraising plan and budget including measurable outcomes and a calendar of activities and events.  

Cultivate and steward a portfolio of mid-level and major donors, as well as prospective donors, and develop a strategic engagement plan involving regular communication, personalized outreach, and donor recognition. 

Meet defined fundraising and donor engagement activity goals, including revenue targets, contact frequency, and portfolio development benchmarks.  

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of donor interactions and contributions in the donor management system. 

Partner with the Marketing team to develop compelling collateral and coordinating marketing strategies to drive attendance, strengthen donor engagement and effectively communicate the impact of giving. 

Develop goals, strategies and tactics for online giving pages, monthly giving, and planned giving opportunities with the Marketing team. 

Work collaboratively with the fundraising team to share insights, strategies, and best practices. 

Support special donor events, including planning, execution, and follow-up. 

Provide support for other fundraising initiatives and campaigns as needed. 

Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with fundraising trends and best practices. 

Other duties as assigned. 

 

Key Competencies/Requirements 

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field. 

Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fundraising, donor relations, or a similar role, preferably within a nonprofit organization. 

Outstanding interpersonal skills in managing external relationships, building trust with high-level stakeholders, and conveying compelling opportunities through public speaking engagements, networking events, and other opportunities for relationship development.  

Willingness to travel domestically and internationally approximately 50% of the time. 

Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.  

Ability to handle a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and completion in a timely manner.  

Exceptional organization and communication skills, both verbal and written. 

Proficient in donor management software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). 

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed. 

 

Compensation 

Full time, exempt position 

Salary based on education and experience.
