What you will be doing in the role of a State Policy Analyst

The Regional Manager, State Policy and Advocacy serves as a leader and subject matter expert, supporting and promoting Komen’s public policy & advocacy initiatives related to breast cancer and public health policy, in the states within assigned region.

Regional Managers lead the development execution of strategy for multiple state legislative campaigns in their assigned region; build statewide policy collaboratives; tracks, reviews and assesses state legislation and regulatory efforts; monitors state budget climate and state breast health programs; reviews, assesses, and reports on state legislative efforts; and supports education and activation efforts of Komen’s grassroots network with assigned region.


What you will bring to the table

  • Serve as subject matter expert for public policy and advocacy efforts in the assigned region and provide day-to-day support for state advocacy activities.
  • Lead the creative vision and development for state-specific advocacy strategies in support of Komen’s Public Policy and Advocacy Priorities within the assigned region.
  • Track, review, assess, and report on state legislation, regulatory efforts, state budget climate, state breast health programs, and state legislative efforts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with state legislators, executives, and their staff within assigned region(s).
  • In collaboration with the Grassroots Team, assists in the execution of training and events in assigned region.
  • Develop messaging, talking points, fact sheets, testimony, letters of support, action alerts and other communications in support of policy efforts.
  • Develop and maintain external relationships and participate with statewide policy collaboratives, coalitions, patient advocacy organizations, healthcare associations and industry partners to identify areas for collaboration.
  • Represent Komen’s Center for Public Policy externally with legislative offices, state government, stakeholders, media, and donors.
  • Promote an organizational culture that values trust, commitment to the mission, scientific integrity, and professional and organizational growth.


We know you will have and be able to

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Government Affairs, Communications and at least 5 years of directly related experience in State Policy & Advocacy.
  • Experience successfully working with state legislatures and agencies in the assigned region in passage and implementation of policies.
  • Proven ability to research, draft, analyze and interpret legislation and execute corresponding advocacy campaigns.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required for effective interaction with elected officials, legislative staff, and other high-profile persons.
  • Proven ability to work independently and creatively, meeting strict deadlines, in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects with varying priorities at one time.
  • Excellent planning, organizational and follow-up skills.
  • Able to travel to the Annual Advocacy Summit; Regional travel for meetings, training, and lobbying needs; up to 50%.


We would love if you also have

  • Master’s degree in public policy, public administration, political science, government affairs, communications, or another relevant field.
  • Working knowledge of breast cancer and public health policy and advocacy environment.
  • Experience with state lobbying registration and ongoing compliance requirements.
  • Proven history of employee and consultant management.

Approximate annual salary of $77,000 – $98,000, exact compensation ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job level, internal equity and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate’s skills, experience and geographic location. Additionally, this is what Komen provides away from the computer:

Komen provides a remote and/or home-based working environment for all active employees. Komen defines remote as the ability to work from any physical location within the U.S. where an employee can perform specified work duties without disruption or distraction. Komen defines home-based roles as positions that are required to reside in a specific market.
