Purpose of Position

The chosen candidate will be responsible for the direct implementation of Covenant House’s philosophy, mission statement, and policies as they pertain to disconnected, homeless, and hard-to-serve youth. As a member of the community support services team, you will establish relationships, provide counseling, and case management on an ongoing basis through community networking.

Responsibilities:

Develop and manage brief service and community support plans

Provide a welcoming environment to youth

Establish healthy relationships by engaging with youth

Provide daily ongoing supportive and crisis counseling

De-escalate physically and verbally hostile situations

Assess youth’s needs for food and provide meals and food packages following safe food handling practices

Refer clients to appropriate resources within Covenant House and in the community

Support youth in reconciling with family

Capture statistics on ETO

Document client interactions on the ETO system

Gather and update information, such as flyers and posters

Clean the kitchen, including defrosting the freezer, cleaning the refrigerator, washing dishes, cleaning the milk machine, stove, and microwaves

Screen for weapons, drugs, gang paraphernalia, and alcohol

Provide backup and relief for C.S.S. reception

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a Child and Youth Worker diploma

A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with hard-to-serve youth

Skilled in assessments, diffusion, intervention, and counseling, with excellent verbal and written skills

Team player with the ability to understand and support volunteers’ needs

Ability to work independently with a high degree of autonomy

Knowledge of community resources, safe food handling, First Aid, CPR, and basic computer skills
