The Samuel Lawrence Foundation (SLF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in San Diego. Our mission is to serve as a platform for sharing knowledge through innovation in science, education, and the arts. We advocate for the safe management of nuclear waste at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), educate the public, and hold corporations and government agencies accountable. With a small, dedicated team, we operate in a fast-paced environment where adaptability and passion drive our work.
We seek a Nuclear Policy Director to provide expertise in nuclear science and the removal and safe containment of nuclear waste. This role will strengthen SLF’s advocacy, influence policy, and shape strategies for addressing the 3.6 million pounds of nuclear waste  director will lead SLF’s nuclear waste initiatives, engaging in policy, scientific, and community efforts to drive solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze nuclear waste storage, transportation, and disposal policies and engage in efforts to find answers.
Research and interpret technical and regulatory information.
Develop reports, white papers, and educational materials.
Represent SLF in meetings with policymakers, regulatory agencies, and coalitions.
Contribute to SLF’s newsletter with one column on very scientific analysis every month.
Attend coalition meetings and occasionally travel to conferences worldwide.
Lead SLF’s nuclear waste strategy, guiding political, economic, and scientific approaches.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
Bachelor’s or Master’s in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, environmental policy, or related field.
Strong knowledge of nuclear waste storage and regulatory frameworks.
Ability to communicate technical concepts to broad audiences.
Experience in research, technical writing, and policy analysis.
Preferred:
Experience in nonprofit work.
Familiarity with California’s environmental and energy policies.
Engagement with policymakers, regulatory agencies, or grassroots organizations.
