Job Description
This is a “Professional Staff” position as defined by the NSEA/NSA Negotiated Agreement and is part of the bargaining unit. Step 1 placement is $78,400 plus an industry-leading benefits package. This person reports to the Associate Executive Director.
Responsibilities
- Carry forward and/or plan field organizing campaigns
- Build structures within local unions to support high-speed membership growth
- Hold hundreds of 1:1 conversations with potential members and current members that successfully move people to action
- Coach and support local leaders to recruit and retain members
- Provide training and support to local unions to build capacity
- Collaborate with governance to advance the interests of locals and members
- Make sense of data and respond accordingly
- Perform other duties as assigned by NSEA Management.
Skills/Requirements
- Proficiency in NSEA approved technology and tools (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Action Builder, Salesforce)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to analyze data
- General knowledge of organizing, bargaining, member rights, and education policy
- Able to offer consultation, support and guidance to members in a variety of circumstances
- Able to work independently
- Able to work well with outside organizations
- Detail oriented, well-organized and able to prioritize work
- Strong advocacy, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
- Able to work with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities
- Effectively manages resources to maximize efficiency and minimize unnecessary costs
- Bachelor’s degree is required
Working Conditions
- Overnight and extended travel as needed for training and meetings around the state and at national conferences as assigned
- Able to lawfully operate a motor vehicle in the State of Nebraska and be insurable under the NSEA commercial policy
- Duties of this position may be performed indoors and outdoors
- Ability to lift 20 pounds when required
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, reach with hands and arms
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Base Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, labor relations, human resources, or a related field.
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in one or more of the following:
- Membership organizing;
- Membership recruitment;
- Labor relations;
- Collective bargaining support;
- Employee advocacy.
- Demonstrated expertise representing employees or members in workplace disputes, grievance matters, contract enforcement, or similar advocacy activities.
- Demonstrated expertise providing training, facilitation, or leadership development programs to adult learners.
- Knowledge of collective bargaining principles, labor-management relations, and public education policy.
- Proficiency in NSEA-required technology systems, including constituent/member databases, Microsoft 365 applications, virtual meeting platforms, and data analysis tools.
- Ability to independently manage a geographic assignment area requiring frequent travel, evening work, weekend work, and overnight travel.
- Valid driver’s license and insurability under NSEA’s commercial insurance policy.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze membership, bargaining, organizing, or worksite data and use that information to develop recommendations.
- Demonstrated expertise working with elected leaders, boards, or committees
- Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, correspondence, training materials, and member communications.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
