Areté Education is a 501(c)3 non-profit agency that trains and empowers historically under-served students to lead successful lives, by partnering with local schools and community groups to grow investment in New York City youth. Areté builds academic, wellness, leadership, and career readiness skills for students and provides immersion in the arts and cultural experiences. Our year-round programming includes after-school programs, summer sessions, and family interventions for 1,500 students and families in the Bronx, Washington Heights, and Bed-Stuy.
About the Role
Areté Education is seeking mission-driven, strategic leaders to join our Board of Directors. As a Board Member, you will play a critical role in guiding the organization’s growth, strengthening its impact, and ensuring long-term sustainability. This is a volunteer unpaid opportunity.

Key Responsibilities
Board Members serve as stewards of Areté’s mission and provide strategic oversight, governance, and advocacy. Responsibilities include:
- Champion the Mission: Serve as a passionate advocate for Areté’s mission, vision, and goals
- Provide Strategic Oversight: Review organizational performance, outcomes, and key impact metrics
- Governance & Financial Stewardship: Uphold duties of care, loyalty, and obedience; ensure ethical and compliant operations; Review and approve audit reports and major financial decisions
- Board Development & Commitment to Diversity: Support recruitment and onboarding of new Board Members that reflects the communities we serve
- Executive Partnership: Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board leadership to advance priorities and ensure execution
- Committee Engagement: Actively participate in committees, task forces, and special initiatives
Expertise we value:
1) Fundraising / Development
- Support and help execute fundraising strategy
- Leverage networks to identify and cultivate donors and partners
- Participate in campaigns, events, and donor engagement efforts
- Support major gifts, sponsorships, and partnership development
- Help shape the organization’s case for support and storytelling
Ideal Background:
-Experience in fundraising, business development, sales, or partnerships
-Strong network and willingness to open doors
-Comfort with donor engagement and relationship-building
2) Marketing & Communications
- Advise on brand strategy, messaging, and positioning
- Support marketing efforts across digital and social platforms
- Expand Arete’s visibility through partnerships, campaigns, and storytelling
- Identify opportunities to elevate thought leadership and community engagement
- Leverage networks to amplify reach and awareness
Ideal Background:
-Experience in marketing, communications, PR, or digital strategy
-Background in brand building, content, or growth marketing
-Creative thinker with strong strategic instincts
3) Finance
- Provide oversight on budgets, financial reporting, and audits
- Advise on financial strategy, risk management, and sustainability
- Ensure strong financial governance and compliance
- Partner with leadership on long-term financial sustainability
Ideal Background:
-Experience in finance, accounting, investment management, or audit
-CPA, CFO, or senior finance leadership experience preferred
-Strong analytical and governance mindset

Time Commitment & Expectations
- Quarterly Board meetings (2–3 hours each)
- Committee participation (4–6 meetings annually)
- Preparation time (~1–2 hours per meeting)
- Participation in key events and initiatives
Estimated Commitment: 4–8 hours per month
- Typical term: 2–3 years (renewable) with the opportunity to renew based on engagement and organizational needs.
- Board members are encouraged to make a meaningful annual contribution and/or support fundraising efforts
