The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW (CDC NHBS-HET2025)
The National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Study (NHBS) is an annual CDC-sponsored project in NYC and other participating sites. The project is aimed at measuring HIV prevalence, testing, access to and utilization of HIV prevention services, and behaviors among groups at an increased risk for HIV. In 2025, we will be conducting a cycle among heterosexually active persons at increased risk for HIV infection (HET). Participants will undergo an interviewer-administered survey, be offered testing for HIV and STIs, and linked to care and services. Participants will be recruited via respondent-driven sampling (RDS), a peer-recruitment method, with a recruitment goal of 550 participants.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Study Operations Assistant (SOA) will report to the Project Director (PD). During formative assessment, they will be responsible for assisting with recruitment and in conducting key informant interviews and focus groups. During data collection, they will support the SOS in recruiting participants, conducting study activities, and in daily activities. Study staff in this position must: 1) adhere to strict detailed survey research protocols; 2) have the ability to comply with strict protocols for confidentiality; 3) have strong attention to detail; and 4) have the ability to establish rapport with diverse racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and sexual orientation groups. Training for all study activities will be provided. Staff in this position will be expected to maintain confidentiality, effectively communicate with their supervisor daily, and be prompt for all study activities. This is a temporary position until the end of 2025 or when the sample size is met, whichever is sooner. Evening and weekend hours may be required.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Support formative research activities, including recruiting and conducting in-depth interviews with professional and community key informants and community engagement and outreach.
Assist SOS and PD in any ongoing formative research.
Assist in the identification of data collection sites, and develop strong, meaningful partnerships with site leadership and other key staff.
Assist SOS and PD with hiring and training data collection staff.
Assist with coupon management, using Coupon Manager software.
Responsible for the study phone and appointment reminders to participants.
Conduct in-person interviewer-administered surveys with participants, when needed.
Accurately document participant information on paper and electronic forms.
Attend and participate in CDC national meetings, if available.
Maintain data integrity (i.e., all data collected accurately represents the information provided by a participant) and participant confidentiality.
This position may require transporting study supplies (i.e., tablets, incentives, paperwork) from the data collection site to personal residence.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED
Ability to learn and use computerized interview programs.
Strong communication skills.
Comfortable asking questions about health, sex, drug use, and stigma/discrimination.
Strong oral communication skills:
Preferred Skills
Fluency in Spanish
Experience working with the community is an advantage, but not required.
Experience with participant recruitment or community outreach.
Experience in conducting research interviews is an advantage but not required.

LOCATION AND HOURS
NYC Health Department, 42-09 28th St, Queens, NY 11101 with study sites to be decided This position is a temporary in-person full-time position. Workdays are Monday-Friday with the potential for weekend or evening work scheduling. This position will be funded until the target sample size is enrolled (n=550) or December 15, 2025, whichever is sooner.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
$55,000 annual.
