SHED, Inc. was founded in 2009 to organize volunteers from local churches to assist seniors in and around University City with home repairs. In 2014, SHED became a 501(c)(3) d. Between 2009 and 2019, SHED served over 400 homeowners with maintenance and repairs, coordinating over 1700 volunteers to complete over 5000 hours of volunteer labor. SHED partnered wit many local churches, the City of University City, the University City School District, banks, and other regional non-profits. In 2019 SHED began the transition to greater organizational stability and community impact with an expanded budget, programs, and capacity in the form of paid staff and an expanded and revitalized board. We adopted the mission of creating stable foundations for accessible and inclusive foundations. We are committed to being a community led housing nonprofit that works to build and maintain housing and homeowners within the third ward of University City.
Member Duties : The Homes and Community Coordinator VISTA Volunteer will build the capacity of SHED by building a support structure for the Home Repair and Community Development programs for the Third Ward in University City, Missouri. As a result of the VISTA Volunteer’s service, we will be able to strengthen housing equity and community development for residents by increasing the number of home repairs we are able to complete and better connecting our community [KF1.1]. This project addresses poverty by creating more stable housing and by reducing access and increasing knowledge of available housing resources for University City residents.
