Job Title: MakerSpace Member Support and Digital Design Specialist
Wage Range:
Starting wage for this position is $20-$22 per hour, with the potential to earn up to $24 per hour based on performance and tenure.
This full-time position requires being onsite five days each week. Benefits include paid medical benefits, Simple IRA matching contribution, sick time, vacation, and holidays.

LACEY MAKERSPACE – OVERVIEW:
Located on the Saint Martin’s University campus, Lacey MakerSpace (LMS) is a community workspace that supports entrepreneurs, artists, hobbyists, and trades professionals. LMS empowers makers by providing training and access to high-tech equipment in areas such as woodworking, welding, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing, textiles, and 3D modeling and design, all aimed at promoting job-skills training, trades skills development, and fostering entrepreneurship and innovation.
POSITION PURPOSE:
The MakerSpace Member Support and Digital Design Specialist provides general support for the daily operations of the Lacey MakerSpace, including customer service, member assistance, safety protocol enforcement, and maintaining equipment and tools. This role also focuses on digital fabrication tasks such as preparing toolpaths, troubleshooting design problems, and instructing users on 3D modeling and digital fabrication processes. Additionally, the position collaborates with other staff to design and execute custom fabrication projects, such as plaques and other one-of-a-kind items.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
General Shop Duties
Assist the MakerSpace community, including members, volunteers, class attendees, and partners with projects, while ensuring the safe use of equipment and tools.
Enforce safety protocol adherence across different areas of the makerspace, ensuring all users follow established safety guidelines.
Assist with class set up, fabrication projects, and events and activities as required.
Track and monitor tool and equipment usage, perform regular maintenance and repairs, and report any needed repairs or maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation of shop equipment.
Organize workspaces, perform general cleaning and custodial duties, and conduct regular inventory checks to ensure supplies and materials are stocked and workspace is clean and orderly.
Conduct tours of the space for prospective members, guests, and visitors; process new member applications as needed and assist with member onboarding, including familiarizing them with MakerSpace policies.
Support member engagement by encouraging participation in classes, workshops, and events.
Administrative Support
Provide internal support for 3D modeling, scanning, and digital design software.
Assist with improving existing programs and researching and developing new initiatives as required.
Answer phones, respond to email correspondence, and provide excellent customer service to members and guests.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with basic computer programs and tools, including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), email, spreadsheets, and document management systems.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated knowledge of Fusion 360 or other 3D modeling software.
Familiarity with or strong willingness to learn how to safely use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and high-tech equipment, including woodworking, metalworking, 3D design, 3D printing, laser cutting, textiles, CNC machining, and related software.
Basic understanding of safety protocols related to operating machinery and tools.
Basic skills in maintaining and troubleshooting common issues with tools and equipment.
Willingness and eagerness to learn new skills and tools as the role evolves.

Highly personable with a strong ability to engage effectively in interpersonal interactions, fostering positive relationships with volunteers, members, and the broader community.

Comfortable in a dynamic workshop environment where physical tasks, such as moving heavy objects, standing for extended periods, and exposure to fumes from welding, painting, and woodworking, are a regular part of the position.
Commitment to maintaining a safe workspace, ensuring that all users, including members, class attendees, and guests, follow safety protocols.
Technologically savvy with proficiency or a strong desire to learn CNC modeling software, 3D design tools, and digital fabrication processes
Ability to troubleshoot design issues and assist others with 3D modeling, CAD software, and other fabrication tasks.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow technical specifications to ensure quality and accuracy in 3D modeling and fabrication tasks.
SPECIAL NOTE:
This is an in-person position requiring weekend hours, typically following a Wed-Sun schedule between 9:30 am and 6:30 pm, with occasional evening shifts for special events and classes.
Additional duties may be assigned as needed by a supervisor to support the overall success of the team, and this job description is subject to revision to accommodate changes in responsibilities.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position reports to the LMS Director. Scheduling and other aspects related to daily operations will be overseen by the Operations Manager. This full-time position requires being onsite five days each week. Benefits include paid medical benefits, Simple IRA matching contribution, sick time, vacation, and eleven paid holidays.
All LMS staff are employees of the Thurston Economic Development Council Center for Business & Innovation (CB&I). The Lacey MakerSpace (LMS) is a program of the CB&I. The LMS exists under the direction of its own Steering Committee with oversight from the CB&I Board. In addition, the CB&I provides administrative support including fiscal accounting, human resources support, and records retention. The Thurston Economic Development Council (EDC) is the state-designated lead economic development organization in Thurston County. The EDC is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors and is the parent organization to the CB&I, a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
