Do you have a passion to work with beef cattle on the largest area of wetland grassland in the country?
We are looking for up to 3 stock people to work as part of a 6-person team responsible for the management of 2,000 beef cattle on the Ouse Washes on a 6-month contract.
The main duties will include daily shepherding, cattle movements, routine veterinary treatments, treating ailments, assisting with record-keeping, and maintaining infrastructure.
What we need from you:
Essential skills, knowledge & experience:
* Some experience of working with cattle (but this will be an excellent opportunity to gain further knowledge of how a large scale cattle grazing operation functions);
* Good basic knowledge of all aspects of cattle husbandry;
* Knowledge of essential record keeping requirements;
* Ability to work as part of a team, and
* Able to occasionally work alone with minimal supervision.
Desirable skills, knowledge & experience:
* Sit astride ATV and Off Road 4×4 certificates;
* Good understanding of agricultural and conservation land management;
* Relevant ecological knowledge relating to grazing as a management tool;
* Proficient and competent in a range of land management tasks related to the grazing operation, and
*
Problem solving
skills.
Please note that tractor driving experience is not essential, and training will be provided by senior staff in all aspects of cattle management and welfare.
Additional Information:
These are Fixed-Term, Full-Time contract for 6 months.
The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
