Description of Work
Position Definition
The Greater Norwalk Literacy Volunteers (GNLV) department is a member of Pro Literacy, the largest adult literacy and basic education membership organization in the nation. The department is overseen by the Library Director and managed by the Coordinators. The part-time Coordinators plan and set goals for the department to increase literacy and computer literacy for the Greater Norwalk adult population. They also direct student and volunteer tutor services and activities around this goal.
Coordinators are responsible for a wide variety of public and non-public duties. This includes outreach, student intake, accurate and confidential maintenance of information files that require constant upkeep in the LACES database. Coordinators also attend conferences and quarterly Connecticut state literacy volunteers meetings and report information received to tutors in lunch and learn sessions. This position works some evenings and weekends.

Duties
Maintains the GNLV office and small computer lab
Identifies literacy needs in the community and assists with addressing those needs
Maintains a community presence through outreach and public relations activities
Recruits, trains and sets up weekly, small group classes for volunteer tutors
Recruits, conducts the intake process and schedules weekly, small group classes for students
Plans biannual student retesting to track student growth
Manages room reservations for classes
Recommends professional materials to be added to the GNLV collection
Plans and prepares bibliographies and booklists
Collects data for statistical analysis and reports
Contributes to marketing material including flyers, press releases and newsletters
Plans some cultural events

Required Knowledge,
Skills And Abilities
Demonstrated ability to work in a professional environment with minimum supervision
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and virtual meeting tools
Up-to-date knowledge of adult literacy and English Language Learner (ELL) books and trends
Knowledge of personalized language learning tools/databases
Knowledge of basic office procedures
Ability to prioritize assigned duties and communicate accomplished tasks
Ability to generate and write reports based on data
Ability to maintains the privacy of tutor and student records
Minimum Qualifications
Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English. A Bachelor’s Degree preferably in
education
, English, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), or a related field from an accredited college or university (or the ability to produce the degree within six months of hire). Alternatively, two years of college with a combination of four years of experience teaching or volunteering in literacy setting.
Experience in adult
education
, fluency in a second language, experience of CASAS adult literacy reading assessments and resources, and experience with Literacy, Adult and Community
Education
System (LACES) student data management software is desired, but not required.
Special Licenses/Certifications AND/OR Supplemental Information
Up to 19.5 hours/week
