General Function:

The Lifeguard at the Itasca County YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
1. At least 15 years old.
2. Committed to the mission and goals of the YMCA.
3. Current certification in Basic Life Support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and any trainings that are necessary for life saving.
4. Current certification in American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent.
5. Full working knowledge of the facility’s safety and emergency procedures.
6. Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
7. Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
8. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
General Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Maintains active surveillance of the aquatics area.
2. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and completes related reports as required.
3. Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
5. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
6. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
7. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
8. Partners with the Maintenance Department when dealing with pool/spa issues as needed.
9. Attend mandatory in-service training monthly.
Typical Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

2. Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
3. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
4. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
5. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
6. Communicate verbally and project voice across a distance in normal and loud situations.
7. Recognize distress signals.
8. Work in a warm, humid environment (usually 80-90 degrees) for the length of the practice or meet.
9. Perform in a noisy environment for the length of the practice or meet.
10. Due to the physical functions of lifeguarding, guards can be paid to train up to 2 hours per pay period at minimum wage.
Employees and volunteers who directly supervise consumers will:
· Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
· Attend required abuse risk management trainings.
· Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
· Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Pay: $13.00 – $15.00 per hour
