The Alisal Center for the Fine Arts (ACFA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through arts education, cultural affirmation, and community engagement. We provide high-quality arts programming that develops artistic excellence while cultivating leadership, confidence, and community pride.

We are seeking a passionate, experienced Lead Dance Instructor to mentor youth and lead culturally responsive dance programming in a community-centered environment.

Position Summary

The Lead Dance Instructor is responsible for planning and teaching weekly dance classes, mentoring students, supporting program development, and representing ACFA at performances and community events. The ideal candidate has experience teaching youth, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to using the arts as a tool for community development.

ResponsibilitiesInstruction & Program Leadership

  • Teach weekly dance classes for beginner through advanced students.
  • Develop lesson plans and curriculum aligned with ACFA programming goals.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
  • Supervise students during all program activities.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance records.
  • Implement California Visual and Performing Arts Dance Standards.
  • Support students’ artistic growth and performance readiness.
  • Assist with planning and coordinating performances, workshops, and community events.
  • Capture and submit photos and digital media from classes and events.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development.
  • Mentor and help onboard new instructors and interns.

Program Administration

  • Follow instructional, event, and work schedules established by the Program Manager.
  • Accurately track and submit hours worked.
  • Assist with grant-related program information and curriculum when requested.
  • Complete event summary reports.
  • Submit purchase and reimbursement requests following ACFA procedures.

Facility Responsibilities

  • Help maintain a clean and organized classroom and facility (stage + dressing room).
  • Report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.

Qualifications (Required)

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Experience teaching dance to youth.
  • Strong knowledge of dance instruction and classroom management.
  • Commitment to serving diverse communities and supporting youth development through the arts.
  • Ability to pass a California Department of Justice background check.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and .
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Valid driver’s license if transporting students.

Preferred

  • Experience teaching Mexican Folklórico or other cultural dance traditions.
  • Experience working with historically underserved communities.
  • Experience developing curriculum or leading arts education programs.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate dance instruction.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment

Instruction takes place primarily at the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts in Salinas, with occasional classes, performances, and events held at partner schools and community locations.

Compensation

  • Instructional Rate: $25–$40/hour, depending on education, experience, and demonstrated teaching ability.
  • Non-Instructional Rate: $25/hour for professional development, meetings, training, non-instructional preparation, and accompanying students to performances and events.

Hours are assigned by the Executive Director and/or Program Manager. Work schedules may vary based on program needs. Employees are responsible for accurately tracking and submitting their timesheets.
