Position Overview:
We are seeking a reliable, patient, and experienced Lead Custodian to join our team at Picatinny Arsenal. The Lead Custodian is responsible for performing janitorial duties while providing day-to-day direction, training, and support to assigned employees, primarily individuals with disabilities. This position plays an important role in ensuring employees understand their responsibilities, receive appropriate training, and can successfully perform their assigned work. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, patience, attention to detail, and the ability to lead by example.
This position is part an AbilityOne contract. The AbilityOne Program creates private-sector jobs for Americans who have disabilities, including veterans and wounded warriors. Applicants with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform cleaning duties including floors, windows, tables, chairs, restrooms, equipment, and other assigned areas.
- Empty trash and dispose of waste following safety protocols.
- Maintain clean, sanitized, organized, and properly stocked work areas.
- Provide day-to-day direction, training, and support to assigned employees, primarily individuals with disabilities.
- Demonstrate cleaning procedures, equipment use, and safety practices, adapting instruction to individual needs.
- Coordinate daily work assignments of a small group of employees and monitor work to ensure quality and completion.
- Provide coaching and feedback to employees.
- Report attendance, performance, safety, maintenance, supply, and equipment concerns to the supervisor.
- Promote a safe, respectful, and supportive work environment.

Required Qualifications:
- 1+ years of janitorial expereince.
- 1+ years of training expereince.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Well-organized, with the ability to prioritize tasks and multitask effectively.
- Good physical stamina and tolerance for repetitive tasks.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of proper and safe use of cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Fluent in English. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The work environment is indoors and outdoors, with exposure to cleaning chemicals and varying temperatures depending on the area. The position involves frequent movement, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Required to talk or hear in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms. Cleaners must be able to work independently, maintain attention to detail, and follow established cleaning procedures in a timely manner. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is generally low to moderate; however, there are occasional loud sounds.
