Puerto Rico Youth at Risk, Inc. (PRYAR) is a non-profit organization that develops prevention programs for at-risk youth since 1996 with the mission to get the youth of Puerto Rico to take control of their lives and modify the conduct that has moved them to take dangerous risks. A Continuum of Socio-Educational Preventive Services integrates services provided to “at-risk” students emphasizing the transitional stages (elementary to middle to high school and post) which prepares students for the University starting in the elementary school, integrating graduates from each level in support of those in lower stages.
The core elements of the projects include mentoring one-to-one, experiential personal and social transformation workshops for themselves and their families, academic support, and significant employment and community service experiences. The Ameri Corps member will be assigned to our San Juan sites as the work base to develop the project. The service may be required to travel to other sites in Puerto Rico since our services are provided in public schools of the municipalities of San Juan, Canovanas, Juncos, and Naguabo.
Member Duties: Ameri Corps members will deliver direct academic support to a minimum of 20 at-risk students and leverage volunteer tutors to aid in specific underdeveloped academic skills. The academic support is one of the components of the Social Educational Services Continuum. The member will also leverage and manage volunteers for the logistics of PRYAR’s major workshops and program activities. In addition, the member will participate in the Personal, Social, and Leadership Development Workshops and activities including teamwork skills.
The Ameri Corps members will be assigned to the San Juan sites in Escuela Ramon Power y Giralt and Escuela República del Perú.
