Role Description The Japan National Director is a contract, on-site role based in Tokyo, responsible for leading Habitat for Humanity Japan’s strategy, programs, and operations. This position oversees country-level planning, implementation, and evaluation of housing and community development initiatives, ensuring alignment with the global mission and organizational standards. Day-to-day responsibilities include managing staff and volunteers, coordinating with local and international partners, overseeing budgets and fundraising activities, and representing the organization to government agencies, donors, and community stakeholders. The National Director leads program development, monitors impact, ensures compliance with local regulations and internal policies, and fosters a collaborative, inclusive work environment. This role also involves regular reporting to regional and global leadership, risk management, and continuous improvement of organizational processes and systems.
Qualifications
- Proven leadership and management experience, including team supervision, strategic planning, and organizational development in the nonprofit or social impact sector.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience building partnerships with government bodies, corporations, NGOs, community groups, and donors.
- Demonstrated competence in program and project management, including budgeting, monitoring and evaluation, and impact reporting.
- Solid fundraising and resource mobilization capabilities, including donor relations, grant writing, and proposal development.
- Excellent communication skills in English and Japanese, with the ability to represent the organization publicly and engage diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of housing, community development, disaster response, or related social issues is highly beneficial.
- Ability to work effectively on-site in Tokyo, handle multiple priorities, and make data-informed decisions under time constraints.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field such as International Development, Public Policy, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or Social Sciences.
- Commitment to Habitat for Humanity’s values, equity and inclusion, and ethical standards in governance and operations.
- Experience working in Japan or in a cross-cultural environment, with strong cultural competency and sensitivity.
