(NESF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded in 1977 to help meet the needs of homeless and low-income individuals and families in Essex County, New Jersey. Our mission is to stabilize individuals in crisis, especially the homeless, the working poor, and those in financial need. Position Overview: The Immigrant Housing Navigator at Newark Emergency Services for Families, Inc. (NESF) will play a crucial role in assisting immigrant families and individuals experiencing housing instability or homelessness. This position focuses on providing culturally responsive support, resources, and direct housing assistance to help immigrant clients secure and maintain stable housing. The Immigrant Housing Navigator will assist clients in navigating the complex housing process, connecting them with available services—such as rental assistance programs, legal aid for immigration-related housing challenges, and language-accessible resources—and ensuring they have access to permanent housing and necessary support systems. Additionally, the Navigator will help clients overcome barriers related to immigration status, documentation, and language in their pursuit of stable housing.
This is a 6-month position with the opportunity to transition into a case management role with similar responsibilities within NESF upon completion of the initial term. The Immigrant Housing Navigator will report to the Emergency Assistance Program Director.
Key Responsibilities:
· Assist immigrant individuals and families experiencing housing instability in securing appropriate housing by connecting them with community-based services, resources, and housing options.
· Conduct housing meet-and-greets with landlords, perform housing inspections, and facilitate housing placements.
· Develop and manage individualized Housing and Service Plans, including coaching, counseling, referrals, and coordination of care to address clients’ needs.
· Educate clients about their rights as tenants, including protections regardless of immigration status, and connect them with legal aid services for immigration-related housing challenges.
· Provide ongoing follow-up support to ensure clients maintain stable housing and have access to necessary services, including employment and financial assistance programs.
· Collaborate with landlords, service providers, and immigrant advocacy organizations to address housing barriers and advocate for clients.
· Act as a liaison to resolve housing-related concerns, ensuring timely interventions and conflict resolution.
· Communicate effectively with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds, offering linguistically and culturally competent services.
· Research and stay informed about affordable housing programs, emergency shelters, and immigrant-friendly housing options in Newark/Essex County.
· Maintain accurate records of client interactions, housing placements, and referrals using data management systems to track housing outcomes and program effectiveness.
· Conduct community outreach to strengthen partnerships with immigrant support networks and increase awareness of available housing resources.
· Assist clients in accessing community resources beyond housing, including legal aid for immigration status adjustments, healthcare services, language access programs, and employment opportunities.
· Participate in team meetings and ongoing professional development to stay current on housing trends, immigrant rights, and best practices in housing navigation.
Required Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in social services, human services, or a related field.
· Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in human services, housing, or a related field.
· Must be fluent in Spanish and able to communicate effectively with residents of different cultures and backgrounds.
· Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with people from diverse socio-economic and immigrant backgrounds.
· Knowledge of housing resources, public assistance programs, community services, and immigrant rights, including barriers immigrants face in securing housing.
· Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while ensuring attention to detail.
· Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with homeless populations or individuals at risk of homelessness.
Familiarity with local housing resources in Newark and the surrounding areas.
Strong advocacy skills and experience working in crisis intervention.
