HR Generalist
Reports to: Executive Director & Muhsen Board
Employment Type: Part-time up to 35 hours per week
Location: Chicago area with occasional travel. Work in office minimum of 2 days a week required.
Position Overview
The HR Generalist will support MUHSEN’s growing national team by executing and improving HR processes, enhancing team relations, and maintaining compliance with nonprofit HR standards. This role ensures that employees are supported, policies are clear, and the organizational culture remains positive, mission driven, and inclusive.
Key ResponsibilitiesEmployee Relations & Culture
Act as a point of contact for employee concerns and workplace issues
Facilitate conflict resolution and maintain a safe, respectful environment
Support employee check-ins, feedback loops, and staff development sessions
Recruitment & Onboarding
Assist with hiring across departments including posting jobs, screening, and scheduling
Lead onboarding of new hires and ensure a smooth integration process
Maintain and update employee records and digital personnel files
HR Policy & Compliance
Maintain and update the employee handbook and HR policy documents
Ensure organizational compliance with federal and state labor laws
Handle documentation for time off, sick leave, and other employee requests
Maintain monthly training on HR policy with entire HQ staff
Establish confidential systems for:
Incident Reporting
Employee Complaints
Investigating said reports and/or complaints
Conflict resolution
Establishing a process for “exit interviews” for all employees, volunteers, and staff.
Team Development & Support
Help coordinate team retreats, trainings, and DEI workshops
Identify professional development opportunities for staff
Assist with evaluations, growth planning, and employee engagement tracking
Assist with employee recruiting and interviewing process
HR Administration
Maintain HR documentation, HRIS systems, and confidential records
Support payroll documentation and benefits coordination in partnership with finance
Prepare internal reports related to staffing, turnover, and workforce trends
Qualifications
Human Resource degree required
3-5 years of HR experience, ideally in a nonprofit or mission-driven setting
Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
Knowledge of HR regulations and best practices
Experience with HRIS or systems like Gusto, or other HR systems
Excellent written and verbal communication
Strong understanding of employment law, compliance, and HR ethics related to equity and retaliation prevention
High emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills, with a trauma-informed or restorative approach a strong plus
Ability to manage sensitive issues with discretion
Preferred Skills
Experience in Islamic or culturally diverse nonprofit spaces
Certification (SHRM-CP or PHR) is a plus
Familiarity with remote team operations
Ability to build trust and serve as a neutral, supportive presence across diverse employee populations
