Job Title: Head of HR and Safety ***Starting Salary range: $68,000-$84,000 per year
Location: Indianapolis (with occasional travel)
FLSA Status: Salaried
Hours: Full Time
Level: Sr. Manager or Director (to be determined by experience level of the chosen person)
Position Summary:
This person will be responsible for full phase recruitment, orientations, onboarding, the intern selection process, employee relations, benefits administration, policy creation and edits, and the day-to-day needs of the HR and Safety areas in an LGBTQ focused center for young people 12-24 years old. This person will also oversee and complete payroll, employee follow-up and communication, and the safety needs of our locations. Working with outside vendors and our benefit broker is also a part of this position. They oversee the main areas of talent acquisition and retention, compensation and benefits, compliance with state and federal regulations, employee relations, and performance review. This strategic role serves as a strategic business partner, bridging company goals with day-to-day people operations.
Key areas of responsibility:
o Strategic Planning: Collaborate with leadership to design organizational structures, manage change during restructuring, and drive long-term workforce planning
o Talent Management: In charge of end-to-end recruitment strategies, performance management and retention planning
o Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure the company adheres to federal, state, and local labor laws, while mitigating employment-related legal risks
o Compensation & Benefits: Design competitive, equitable pay scales and comprehensive benefits packages that stay within the payroll budget
o Employee Relations: Mediate workplace disputes and oversee investigations into misconduct or policy violations, and advise employees who share concerns
Other responsibilities:
- Lead development of HR policies and procedures ensuring consistent application of policies across the organization
- Guide managers through processes and questions about HR related topics, HR procedures and company policies.
- Coordinate training for all IYG staff such as workplace safety and people manager’s training in practices such as performance reviews, the IYG improvement process, recognition, attendance, and promotion requests.
- Upkeep and revision of the employee handbook at least once every two years
- Advise managers in appropriate resolution of employee relations issues
- Conduct exit interviews and prepare employee separation notices and related documentation
- Maintain all Human Resource records and files
- Know and maintains compliance with federal and state employment regulations
- Assist auditors and grant partners with requested reports or documents
- Manage performance and disciplinary matters while coordinating with managers
- Complete all steps of the payroll process and assist employees to enroll in benefits
- Work with benefits broker to choose benefits, get competitive rates and to ensure correct billing and coverage
- Maintain accuracy and confidentiality of personnel records
- Ensure all required workplace postings are current and displayed in visible location
- Process all monthly bills to be sent for payment for benefits, Cobra and others
- Make certain that we are complying with state required screenings, attestations, permits
- Supervise and mentor any direct reports in HR
- Director and above are to be a part of the Leadership Team to decide and collaborate on the present and future issues
- Lead all safety efforts for the center including training, drills and upkeep of equipment with partners
- Help with special events and interact with clients on occasion
- Other duties as assigned
Reports to the: CEO
Position Requirements:
· BA/BS or equivalent from an accredited university in HR or a related area of study
· SHRM or HRCI certification preferred
· Minimum of 6 years of professional work experience in all areas of HR for Sr. Manager, 8 years of more for Director level including all phases of strategic planning, recruitment, employee relations, compliance and risk management compensation and benefits.
· Two years or more experience supervising others when there is an employee reporting to this person
· Two years or more experience in safety related issues/needs/compliance.
· Must be able to work on 12/28-12/30 this year.
· Expert knowledge of state and federal employment laws including FLSA, ADA and Cobra
· Strong knowledge and competency about LGBTQ+ issues, needs and terms
· Knowledge of local LGBTQ history and culture in the area preferred
· Demonstrated ability to function exceptionally in rapidly growing and fast-paced work environment; ability to multi-task while prioritizing important issues
· Experience with MS Suite, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
· Must be able to deal with difficult issues confidentially
· Strong time management, organization, communication and public speaking
· Ability to interact with a constructive and professional manner.
· Must work in the center four days a week or more for 6 or more hours a day. (Can work at home one day a week)
· Occasional travel to other IYG centers in the state (5%)
· Ability to uphold all HR Standards, laws and other regulations and explain them to others as needed
· Have a strong work ethic and be a self-starter
· Must have the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others
· Must pass all background checks
