Handyman

The League Education and Treatment Center is seeking a part-time handyman to help with projects and the maintenance of its facilities. Responsibilities include maintaining the mechanical functioning of the building; perform basic carpentry chores; responding to emergency mechanical situations, performing HVAC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing tasks. Ideal candidate is expected to work onsite and adapt to changing work schedule to meet the needs of the agency.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: :

Maintains the building’s interior and exterior and that all spaces are presentable; ensures building is in safe and good condition.

Assists the in-house facilities department with ongoing projects.

Identify and report any need for major repairs; identify and correct minor deficiencies.

Perform electrical maintenance, replacing light switches and outlets, replacing bulbs and lamps as needed.

General repairs including painting, wall repairs, plumbing and other maintenance tasks as required.

Perform furniture assembly, carpentry and locksmith tasks.

Maintains tools and equipment in a safe and orderly manner and all supplies are organized and stored in appropriate areas.

Perform other duties as assigned and assists in emergencies as needed.

Education, Skills and Experience:

Must have a High School Diploma or GED.

Must be customer service oriented and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to understand and carry out directions and instructions.

Ability to understand construction drawings.

Ability to handle and use smallheld tools and power tools as well as use larger power and construction equipment, buffing and extraction machines.

Must be able to be on feet majority of workday, carry equipment and materials, climb ladders and work in various rooms.

Should demonstrate the following competencies: dependable, takes initiative and have the ability to work independently.

Ideal candidate should have experience in the following areas:

Spackling, painting, sheet rocking and skim coating; troubleshooting and correcting small plumbing issues such as replacing faucets, changing filters, etc.; undertaking light installation; troubleshooting and repairing appliances; locksmithing; installing drapes and blinds; performing floor repairs, VCT, and carpeting.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

Considerable heavy lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.

Pushing and pulling heavy objects.

Exposure to harsh chemicals and wet conditions; exposure to hot and cold temperatures.

Must be able to crouch, kneel, climb, and bend.

Work Schedule: part-time (20 hours/week)

The League Education and Treatment Center is a non-profit agency dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with psychiatric and developmental disabilities. Each day, we serve over 500 at-risk and underserved children and adults from all parts of the greater New York City area.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $30.00 – $35.00 per hour

Schedule:

4 hour shift

Day shift

Evening shift

Holidays

Monday to Friday

Weekends as needed
