For more than 50 years, Matt Urban Human Services has proudly served East Buffalo, the Town of Cheektowaga, and West Seneca by providing compassionate, comprehensive support to individuals and families facing poverty, homelessness, mental illness, and substance use disorders.
Through housing, workforce development, supportive services, and person-centered, trauma-informed care, we help people achieve stability, dignity, and long-term success.
We are seeking a dynamic, strategic, and mission-driven Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter of impact, growth, and innovation.
Position Summary
The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization and reports directly to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director is responsible for overall leadership of the agency, including strategic direction, financial sustainability, program excellence, staff development, external partnerships, and community visibility.
This leader will build upon a strong legacy while positioning the organization to meet emerging community needs and future opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance
- Lead implementation of the agency’s strategic plan and long-term vision.
- Partner closely with the Board of Directors to support effective governance and informed decision-making.
- Prepare for and attend Board and committee meetings in collaboration with the Board Chairperson.
- Monitor trends in human services, housing, funding, and community needs to guide strategic priorities.
Organizational & Operational Excellence
- Oversee all agency operations, programs, facilities, and administrative functions.
- Develop and lead a high-performing leadership team aligned with organizational goals.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and respect.
- Ensure agency facilities are safe, welcoming, and supportive for clients and staff.
- Promote technology and data systems that strengthen efficiency and outcomes.
Financial Stewardship
- Provide strong fiscal leadership, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and long-term sustainability planning.
- Ensure sound internal controls, risk management practices, and financial accountability.
- Work with leadership and the Board to identify new revenue opportunities and maintain financial health.
Fundraising & External Relations
- Lead fundraising, donor engagement, grant development, and marketing strategies.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for the organization.
- Build strong partnerships with funders, elected officials, community leaders, businesses, and peer agencies.
- Represent the agency in public forums, coalitions, and advocacy efforts.
Compliance & Program Growth
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, contracts, and funding requirements including LIHTC, HUD, HOME, and related standards.
- Review agency programs regularly and recommend expansion, restructuring, or new initiatives based on need and impact.
- Advance policies and practices that improve the lives of vulnerable populations.
Talent & Culture
- Recruit, develop, and retain a strong, mission-driven workforce.
- Support leadership development, employee engagement, and succession planning.
- Champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and fair treatment in all workplace practices.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Health, Social Work, or related field.
- Minimum of five years of senior leadership experience in nonprofit, housing, healthcare, or human services settings.
- Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors.
- Demonstrated success in financial management, operations, and staff leadership.
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and public speaking skills.
- Proven ability to lead with integrity, transparency, and sound judgment.
- Commitment to the mission of serving vulnerable and underserved communities.
Preferred
- Experience with affordable housing, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), HUD, HOME, or supportive housing operations.
- Fundraising, grant management, or capital project experience.
- Familiarity with Western New York community systems and partnerships.
