Position Summary

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of Amare and works in partnership with the Board of Directors to advance the organization's mission, strategic vision, and long-term sustainability. This position is responsible for leading a rapidly growing Recovery Community Organization through its next phase of organizational development by building systems, developing leaders, expanding community partnerships, and securing sustainable funding.

The Executive Director provides strategic leadership while ensuring operational excellence, financial stewardship, grant compliance, and exceptional peer recovery support services. The successful candidate is a visionary leader who enjoys building organizations, developing people, and creating long-term impact within the recovery community.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Organizational Growth

Partner with the Board of Directors to shape the future of Amare by:

  • Developing and implementing a long-term strategic vision that positions Amare for sustainable growth.
  • Building a resilient, scalable organization capable of expanding services while maintaining operational excellence.
  • Identifying emerging opportunities through community needs assessments, research, and best practices in recovery support services.
  • Leading organizational change and successfully implementing new initiatives.
  • Establishing measurable organizational goals and monitoring performance through data-driven decision making.
  • Continuously evaluating organizational capabilities and creating roadmaps for future investments and growth.

Organizational Leadership

Provide executive oversight of all organizational operations by:

  • Ensuring high-quality delivery of peer-led recovery support services, including recovery coaching, family recovery services, workforce development, transportation assistance, recovery community centers, sober living initiatives, and treatment referrals.
  • Directly supervising organizational leaders while cultivating a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Coaching, mentoring, and developing staff to maximize both professional growth and organizational effectiveness.
  • Building strong internal systems, policies, and procedures that support long-term organizational sustainability.

Grant Administration, Compliance & Stewardship

Provide executive leadership over Amare's diverse grant portfolio by:

  • Overseeing multiple federal, state, county, and foundation grants simultaneously.
  • Ensuring full compliance with grant agreements, contractual requirements, reporting deadlines, and program deliverables.
  • Reviewing and approving grant budgets, financial reports, and program performance reports prior to submission.
  • Monitoring participant outcomes and ensuring accurate documentation, data collection, and performance measurement.
  • Interpreting Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs), grant agreements, and regulatory requirements to ensure organizational compliance.
  • Working collaboratively with leadership staff to ensure grant-funded programs achieve intended outcomes.

Financial Leadership

Provide sound financial stewardship by:

  • Leading the development and management of organizational budgets.
  • Monitoring financial performance, cash flow, and organizational sustainability.
  • Working closely with accounting professionals, auditors, and the Board Finance Committee.
  • Understanding grant budgets, allowable costs, indirect cost methodologies, and cost allocation practices.
  • Ensuring organizational compliance with nonprofit financial management standards and audit requirements.
  • Making strategic financial decisions that strengthen Amare's long-term sustainability.

Resource Development

Create and sustain diverse revenue streams by:

  • Leading grant development efforts, including identifying, writing, and securing competitive grant funding.
  • Cultivating relationships with foundations, government agencies, corporate sponsors, and private donors.
  • Developing fundraising strategies that diversify organizational revenue.
  • Strengthening Amare's brand and community presence to increase philanthropic investment.
  • Identifying new funding opportunities aligned with Amare's mission and strategic priorities.

Community Leadership

Serve as Amare's primary ambassador by:

  • Building meaningful partnerships across healthcare, behavioral health, government, education, law enforcement, employers, and community organizations.
  • Representing Amare through public speaking engagements, conferences, coalition meetings, media interviews, and legislative advocacy.
  • Cultivating strong relationships with elected officials, funders, community leaders, and partner organizations.
  • Promoting recovery-oriented systems of care while reducing stigma surrounding substance use disorders.

Board Relations & Governance

Partner with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance by:

  • Providing timely and transparent communication regarding organizational performance, finances, strategic initiatives, and emerging risks.
  • Supporting Board development and strategic planning.
  • Assisting with policy development and governance best practices.
  • Ensuring compliance with all nonprofit regulations and organizational bylaws.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A deep commitment to Amare's mission and the recovery community.
  • Executive leadership experience within nonprofit, behavioral health, healthcare, human services, or related organizations.
  • Five or more years of progressive leadership experience managing programs, budgets, staff, and organizational growth.
  • Experience overseeing grant-funded programs and complex funding portfolios.
  • Demonstrated success building strategic partnerships and community collaborations.
  • Strong financial management and budgeting experience.
  • Exceptional communication, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proven ability to lead organizational change and build high-performing teams.
  • Experience supervising and developing leaders.
  • Proficiency with technology and data systems that improve organizational effectiveness.
  • Bachelor's degree required; candidates with significant executive leadership experience and demonstrated success in nonprofit management may be considered in lieu of a degree. A master's degree is preferred.
  • Lived experience in recovery or significant experience working within recovery support services is highly valued.
