Job Overview
The Equine Specialist supports both the care of our horses and the success of equine-assisted learning sessions with youth. This role is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and organized environments in stalls, arenas, and pastures, and ensuring the horses are healthy and ready for programming. In sessions, the Equine Specialist takes a supportive role, helping facilitate therapeutic and educational activities alongside therapists and case managers. This includes preparing horses, observing horse behavior, and assisting during and after sessions as needed. The Equine Specialist works with horses regularly—through groundwork, enrichment activities, and exercise—to support their mental and physical well-being and help ensure they stay engaged, responsive, and effective in their work with youth.
Duties
Ensures horses receive daily care and the barn environment remains clean, safe, and functional.
Participate in activities with the horses to keep horses physically active and mentally stimulated.
Assist clinical workers during equine-assisted learning sessions with clients as assigned.
Help prepare horses and equipment for equine-assisted learning sessions.
Support the creation of a safe and nurturing environment for both horses and participants.
Oversees work shifts for youth barn care workers and ensures completion of equine care responsibilities while providing helpful feedback for youth to develop essential job skills.
Participate in team meetings and contribute insights on participants’ interactions with horses.
Recognize the wide-spread impact of trauma and implement a trauma-informed approach while providing treatment to youth and their families.
Responsibilities
· Participates in required administrative duties such as staff meetings, required training/in-services, Q.A., etc.
· Foster an environment that supports the recovery of persons served
· The Equine Specialist is responsible for general equine care, including but not limited to:
o Feed and water horses according to their specific dietary needs as assigned.
o Groom, turn out, and monitor each horse’s health daily; promptly report any concerns to the team.
o Maintain and assist with documentation of health and activity records for each horse
o Work with farrier, veterinarian, equine dentist, and other equine health service providers when administering services to horses
o General cleaning, mucking stalls, sweeping floors, and maintaining a clean and professional working environment
o General cleaning and maintenance of tack and equipment
o Checking the safety of stalls, paddocks, and pastures; communicating any maintenance needs to the Director of Equine Services
o Communicate with barn manager and Director of Equine Services regarding the need to re-order feed, supplies, or other necessary items for replacement in a timely manner.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.03 – $22.00 per hour
