Rutgers University–Newark has created initiatives such as Community Engagement Day and Alternative Breaks that provide students with opportunities to support communities. The university continues to build sustainable systems that increase volunteer opportunities and strengthen partnerships addressing poverty. The City of Newark faces challenges related to poverty, including food insecurity, housing instability, and limited access to resources. Many organizations provide essential services but need capacity to recruit volunteers and expand impact.

Member Duties : The VISTA will collaborate with the Advancing Community Collaboration, Engagement, Service, and Support Committee to strengthen partnerships. This project supports anti-poverty goals by increasing the capacity of organizations serving low-income residents, expanding volunteer resources, and creating systems that benefit Newark beyond VISTA service.
