Program Description:
The Graham SLAM (Support, Lead, Achieve, Model) program works with youth between the 8th grade and age 26 who are in Grahams programs including foster care, foster care prevention and community-based afterschool programs. The program aims to put youth on a livable wage path by focusing on their success in high school, college, and career development. The program sticks with youth through age 26, or until they are on a living wage career path.
Principal Objective/Role Overview:
The Education Success Coordinator is responsible for engaging youth and stakeholders in activities that promote excellent educational outcomes for all Graham Windham youth seeking post-secondary education. This includes leading educational planning, assessments, advocacy efforts and providing consistent support for all youth. The coordinator monitors student progress during their post-secondary journey and assures them that school placements are appropriate and that students have strong educational and career choices for the future.
Job Responsibilities:
Provides support through the post-secondary education process for all youth in SLAM, including those seeking vocational opportunities and military training
Completes educational assessments with youth interested in post-secondary education & assists in creating a college access and success plan
Assist students with college/postsecondary education planning including, but not limited to standardized testing, pre-college requirements, exploration and selection of colleges for application and financial aid
Responsible for documenting and tracking the progress of each youth including producing reports and inputting data
Facilitate and Plan workshops related to college readiness, financial aid, and networking.
Oversee the fidelity of the College Crew curriculum and other post-secondary related content.
Travel to Graham sites to provide on-site individual and/or group advisement on post-secondary planning
Organize and coordinate college trips, fairs for Graham youth (agency wide). When required this includes visiting colleges/universities individually to learn about their program options
Build and maintain partnerships with CUNY/SUNY college personnel and other partnering agencies.
Liaison between Graham, CUNY, the ACS College Initiative Programs, and any other relevant academic partners.
Manage New Yorkers for Children, Freshmen 15 and Educational Training voucher enrollment in support of program youth
Develop and facilitate college planning and financial aid training for foster parents and birth parents
Attend monthly planning meetings and training related to the field.
Provide SLAM Coaches and Supervisors with required and requested post-secondary information regarding the youth.
Position Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in education, Social Work or a related field completed upon application
Minimum of 2 years experience working with youth ages 16-25 in a non-profit or educational setting.
Knowledge of NYC Department of Education laws, regulations, procedures and programs.
Knowledge of the financial aid application process including FASFA.
Possession of a valid NYS drivers license a plus.
Knowledge and understanding of collegiate life and culture.
Awareness of foster care and ACS mandates.
Other Requirements:
Flexibility to work evenings, extended hours and occasional weekends as necessary
Must be able to travel to the Graham-Windham offices located in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn
Must be self-motivated
Excellent time management skills
Excellent writing and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and community-based resources.
Salary & Compensation:
Base Salary or Hourly Rate: $57,500.00/year ($31.60/hour)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
