About the Position
The Santa Barbara County Fire Safe Council (SBCFSC) is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and collaborative Education Programs Assistant to support the growth and delivery of our wildfire education and community outreach programs.
Working closely with the Education Program Manager, this position will help develop and implement K–12 wildfire education curriculum, build relationships with teachers and educational partners, and support educational programming in schools and informal learning settings. The position will also assist with community events and outreach focused on wildfire preparedness, home hardening, defensible space, and community resilience.

Key Responsibilities
Education & Curriculum
- Assist with developing, refining, organizing, and implementing engaging, age-appropriate K–12 wildfire education curriculum and materials.
- Support curriculum pilots and programming with teachers, schools, youth organizations, and informal educational settings.
- Gather feedback and help evaluate and improve educational programs.
- Help expand relationships and partnerships with educators, schools, universities, and community organizations.
Programs & Events
- Assist with planning and implementing educational programs for students, teachers, families, and community members.
- Support larger events such as student art contest celebrations, family wildfire preparedness programs, and home hardening/defensible space fairs.
- Assist with event logistics, materials, volunteers, presenters, exhibitors, registration, and communications.
- Attend and support SBCFSC and other community events by staffing information tables, engaging with community members, and sharing educational resources and information about SBCFSC programs.
- Represent SBCFSC in a welcoming, professional, and informative manner at community events and outreach activities.
Program Support
- Assist with outreach, communications, program evaluation, data collection, and grant reporting.
- Maintain organized program materials, contact lists, calendars, and other resources.
- Research educational and wildfire preparedness topics and opportunities for program growth.
- Perform other duties related to education and outreach as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Experience in education, youth programming, community outreach, environmental education, nonprofit programs, or a related field.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to develop clear, engaging educational materials and work effectively with diverse audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office.
Preferred:
- Experience developing or implementing K–12 curriculum.
- Experience working with teachers, schools, or informal educational organizations.
- Experience planning educational programs or community events.
- Familiarity with wildfire preparedness, home hardening, defensible space, fire ecology, or environmental education.
- Experience working with youth and/or community-based organizations.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills.
Work Environment
This is a part-time position averaging 20 hours per week. Work will include a combination of office/remote work, meetings, school and community visits, and educational and outreach events throughout Santa Barbara County. Some evening and weekend work may occasionally be required. Local travel within the county is expected.
Reliable personal transportation required. This position requires travel to schools, community events, and other off-site locations. Mileage for approved work-related travel will be reimbursed in accordance with organizational policy.
